Walk away and froth

Freedom in the kitchen can take many forms. Sometimes it is a matter of acquiring the proper ingredients that allow us to express our intentions. Other times, it is a matter of having the right tool for the job; having the right equipment certainly helps--and is necessary in--many food preparations. But sometimes, having freedom in the kitchen simply means being able to walk away.

The Bonjour Turbo Whisk is a battery-operated contrivance that allows for simple prepping to be done in any room of the house. (Or outside of the house, for that matter.) While the ability to perform the … Read more

Wave a wand, make a meal

It's easy to get carried away when preparing something to eat.

Often it starts with something simple like chopping an onion. Then--as long as you have it out and all--perhaps the prepped onion could be used for a side dish to go with the main course. Whisk up something unusual

Available in a variety of colors, the Nemo Whisk will definitely stand out in your kitchen drawer. The whisk mimics a squid, with long wavy tentacles capable of all the whisking you need to do. The Nemo Whisk was created by French designer Laurent Mouveau and has more than a touch of whimsy about it. Even the "tentacles" of this whisk have little curls to make the whole thing look a little more like a real creature, rather … Read more

Whisking, the hands-free way

When I was little, my grandmother would often draft me to help her in the kitchen. Invariably, she would hand me a whisk, position me at the stove, and instruct me to keep stirring no matter what. Whether there was gravy, pudding, or something else in the pan, she could always tell if I stopped stirring because of the lumps or a sticky mess on the bottom of the pan.

I've found a better option for the constant stirring gravy requires, though: the Stirr is an hands-free whisk that never gets tired or bored. Just set it in a … Read more

A different kind of whisk

I keep my wire whisk in one of my kitchen drawers. Extricating it from there involves opening the drawer partially, reaching deep into the back, and then bending the whisk out of whatever mangled position it has gotten itself into. The first thing that caught my eye about Kuhn Rikon's Silicone Flat Whisk was the shape: it's flatter and a little more compact than a traditional whisk. I immediately thought it could be the answer to my whisk-storage woes.

But that's not the only benefit of the Silicone Flat Whisk's newfangled appearance. While the handle is … Read more
