Open WebOS 1.0 arrives for those who dare to port

Call it the ghost of Palm past. Today the once-lauded WebOS, originally a smartphone operating system, lives on once again in the form of Open WebOS 1.0.

Issued by Hewlett-Packard (HP), the first open-source version of Open WebOS is now ready for developers and others in the open-source community to port Open WebOS to any number of devices.

In a demo video, HP Chief Architect Steve Winston shows how the operating system works on an HP desktop.

The full version of Open WebOS 1.0 follows a pair of beta releases made available earlier this year. While HP is … Read more

HP launches first version of Open WebOS in beta

Months after Hewlett-Packard originally announced the open-source version of WebOS, the beta version of the platform is on its way out the door.

Today's release includes two environments for developers. The first is the desktop build, which is said to provide "the ideal development environment" for designing the WebOS user experience with more features and integrating other open-source technologies on the Ubuntu desktop.

Some of those new features include support for core apps such as Calendar and Contacts as well as third-party Enyo apps.

The second is the OpenEmbedded build for porting WebOS to new devices. It'… Read more

HP's new WebOS chief wants to hit the ground running

Hewlett-Packard is banking that its newly named WebOS chief, Stephen DeWitt, can tap into his start-up roots as he goes after the likes of Apple and Google with the company's fledgling mobile-device business.

DeWitt, who was named to his new position yesterday, will be busy with more than just the "official launch" of WebOS on July 17. He will also be responsible for convincing consumers that its TouchPad tablet is worth a look and that developers should start creating applications for his platform.

"There are a lot of priorities," he said in an interview with … Read more

HP reshuffles WebOS management

Hewlett-Packard has reshuffled the team responsible for its mobile ambitions, bringing in a veteran executive to expand the reach of its WebOS platform.

HP said today that it has appointed Stephen DeWitt to run the WebOS business. Jon Rubinstein, who joined HP through the acquisition of Palm and previously ran the business, is taking on a more holistic product role that ensures WebOS works across the company's many products.

DeWitt, who previously ran the company's personal systems group in the Americas region, will be tasked with expanding the adoption and distribution of WebOS products. The company said he … Read more

HP: Number of mobile apps doesn't matter

Apple and Google like to boast about the size of their respective app stores as a measure of their popularity among developers, and by extension, customers. Hewlett-Packard is about to make a big push into that same market and does not have the ability to compete in that area. So rather than the size of its app store, HP is banking on the size and reach of the company to convince developers to climb aboard their WebOS ship.

When the HP TouchPad goes on sale Friday, the company says its first tablet will have between 300 and 400 native tablet … Read more
