Nokia exec throws down gauntlet against Samsung

Nokia may be going through a rough patch, but that doesn't mean it's lost its ability to trash-talk.

Chris Weber, executive vice president of sales and marketing, took to Twitter this morning to specifically challenge Samsung Electronics.

"Samsung take note, next generation Lumia coming soon," he tweeted.

Companies rarely call out specific competitors, often keeping the corporate rhetoric to ambiguous and general references. It's a bold move by Weber, considering Samsung is the global leader in smartphones, and Nokia's share continues to slip.

It's also unclear if Weber was making a clever reference … Read more

Grill, griddle, and wok

Grill enthusiasts find a way to get the job done. But that doesn't necessarily mean a grill hack is necessary to achieve wanted results. After all, grilling is about relaxing; fighting through some shaky contraption just isn't for anybody. (Although, with the weather outside being so frightful, one does have plenty of time to ponder possibilities.) For an elegant solution to stir-fry or griddling on the grill, there is an easier way.

The Weber Original Gourmet BBQ System is like a DYI griller's dream (or nightmare, as the case may be since all the DIY-ness is removed). … Read more

Most CEOs not tapping into social media

A majority 64 percent of CEOs are not using social media to engage with the public and other stakeholders, according to a new study from PR firm Weber Shandwick.

Released yesterday, the report "Socializing Your CEO: From (Un)Social to Social" (PDF) looked at the social media presence and activities of CEOs from the world's top 50 companies.

Among those CEOs profiled, 93 percent have been reaching out to people outside their companies in traditional ways. Most have been quoted in news and business publications, while 40 percent have talked to audiences directly at public events.

Bose teams up with the Chevy Volt

After all the informative video thrown your way this week, you may be wondering if there's anything about the 2011 Chevy Volt that isn't more efficient than other vehicles. Sorry, but even the stereo isn't one of them. Today's video clip is about how professional audio titan Bose got involved in the making of Chevrolet's electric hybrid car set for release later this year.

In this video, Ed Peper, Chevy's North American vice president, introduces the partnership between the American auto manufacturer and Bose in the conception and creation of an energy-efficient sound system … Read more

Barbecue companion and a NFL football game: iPhone apps of the week

Before I get to the iPhone apps of the week, I want to share with you an interesting tidbit I read over at AppleInsider regarding the long-awaited Mac tablet. It's one of those cloak-and-dagger-type stories, where an unnamed, (possibly) credible source made a mysterious phone call to an editor about new hardware from Apple. It all sounds kind of fishy to me, but the source apparently described how he had been at a meeting with Apple and had handled what looked like an iPhone (touch screen, black back panel, home button, and all), except it had a 10-inch screen. … Read more

Weber may be the company that perhaps more than any other makes us think of backyard grilling. Get the grill going with a press of a button

As the weather changes and we all start to get a little warmer, barbecues across the nation are going to be wheeled out of their hibernation spots. Getting the grill together requires perhaps a little cleaning, finding a suitable location, and of course, collecting all the accessories. I am always down for a barbecue, but that doesn't necessarily mean I am always ready for one. I keep my charcoal in one area, lighter fluid in another, and my utensils are scattered all about. While some people may have their grilling act together a bit more, I would certainly benefit … Read more

A 'post-x86 world'? Preposterous!

I honestly don't know whether Om Malik's blog site, GigaOM, is intended to be informative or merely entertaining. I pointed out a previous example of the overwrought rhetoric that permeates that site last September (in the context of Comcast's then-new usage cap policy), but generally, I try to ignore the nonsense there for the same reasons that I ignore talk radio.

But like it or not, GigaOM is widely read, and sometimes when a post there bears directly on a market that's important to me, I can't bear to let it go. This is one … Read more

A portable propane grill to be proud of

With the threat of layoffs looming large for many of us, big-ticket purchases are the first to get nixed. So, if you'd been putting off the purchase of a grill, you may have decided that you just can't justify the $400 or so a decent setup costs.

And while it's true that a full-size monster cooking station starts at $400 and runs as high as $2,000, unless you're regularly cooking up whole cows to feed a crowd, you can get by with less. Imagine the great taste of barbecue in your backyard for under $200. … Read more
