Vintage Camera 1.04 Review

There are thousands of camera applications available in the Play store that offer legitimate alternatives to the stock camera application. Vintage Camera, however, is not one of them. It proved easy to use, but produces low-quality images and has limited features. Most users may find this application amusing at first but this isn't really an app with staying power.

The installation runs easily and the overall operation of the application is intuitive. While the user interface is simple, it lacks many features. The main screen consists of a viewfinder and a scrolling menu for the various effects. Eight different … Read more

High-end audio on the cheap

One of the things that separates high-end audio from mass market gear is that it's built to last and perform at a high level for decades. I bought a 20-year-old, mint condition Audio Research SP-6C tube preamplifier 10 years ago. It looked great and sounded wonderful, but a few years later I sold it to my cousin, who was just starting to get into high-end audio.

Late last year, I bought a 30-year-old Krell KSA 50 stereo amplifier from one of my old customers. He loved the amp and listened to it all the time, but he needed money … Read more

Commodore 65 prototype sells for $7,625

Did you adore your 64? Well, wanna buy a 65? That'll cost you.

Earlier this month we saw how fans of vintage home computers can get a little crazy on eBay, bidding up the price of a 1983 10MHz Texas Instruments TI-99/8 to $3,240.

Well that's nothing compared with the enthusiasm that Commodore commands. A prototype Commodore 65 more than doubled the winning TI bid when it sold on eBay recently for a whopping $7,625. … Read more

This lovely 10MHz home computer, yours for only $3,240

Nostalgia for vintage PCs knows no bounds. I still have my Apple IIc in storage, and God knows why. But I don't think I'd spend thousands on a 30-year-old machine like one eBay buyer did.

A bidding war for the rare Texas Instruments TI-99/8 has turned heads among fans of these early PCs. The winning bid of $3,240 was also unusually high for a computer of that era that's sold on eBay.

The machine is an engineering prototype designed to bolster TI's precarious position in the brutal home computer wars of the early 1980s. … Read more

The greatest audio and video products of the 20th century

It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when audio and video products were introduced that were so revolutionary that their impact was felt literally decades after their introduction.

Take the JBL L100 Century. It was the first speaker I fell in love with. Its brilliant orange "waffle" foam grille and white 12-inch woofer looked so cool in the early 1970s when the competition's speakers were all drab brown boxes with boring cloth grilles. The JBL was the ultimate "rock" speaker of the era, so my Hendrix and Led Zeppelin LPs never … Read more

Hands-on with the snappy Gizmon iCA iPhone case

YOKOHAMA, Japan--We've previously reported on the Gizmon iCA, an iPhone case that makes your smartphone look like a vintage rangefinder. The company was at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show, and we learned it has plans to launch a whole system of special-effect lenses and accessories for its flagship case soon.

In addition to the fisheye and macro lenses already available, future attachments will include tele, wide, tunnel effector, mirage, and circular polarizing special-effects filters. Sure, some of these effects could be easily reproduced using apps, but doing it the old-fashioned way and getting it right the first time without post-processing has a certain appeal. Other accessories include a car stand, mounted flash unit, mini tripod, remote shutter release, and silencer. … Read more

Turn your iPhone into a vintage rangefinder

Fans of vintage cameras can now dress their iPhones in Gizmon's iCA case, which makes the handset look like a Leica rangefinder camera. The iCA case also comes with some useful functions, such as the ability to capture images via the case's shutter button and frame the scene with its optical viewfinder.

Made of polycarbonate, the $65 case also has a lens mount for users to swap four lenses, a tripod socket for long exposures, and strap lugs for you to loop your handset on a neck strap like a regular camera.

An entire system of accessories is currently in the works, with the company looking into developing attachments such as special-effects filters, an external flash, and a car accessory stand, to name a few.
