Iran launches own YouTube-like video-sharing Web site

Iran has launched a video-sharing site in its latest effort to provide alternative, government-sanctioned Internet services.

Dubbed "Mehr," the Farsi word for affection, the site aims to attract Persian-speaking users and promote Iranian culture, according to the About Us page reviewed by the Agence France-Presse.

"From now on, people can upload their short films on the Web site and access [IRIB] produced material," said Lotfollah Siahkali, deputy chief of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

The Iranian government has been waging a battle against what it calls "inappropriate" content on the Internet. The government announced … Read more

Former Zappos CEO creates Threadlife to share video instantly

Threadlife, a new video-sharing app developed by a former Zappos founder, intends to make capturing video as easy as taking a photo -- one three-second clip at a time.

Created by Zappos founder and former CEO Nick Swimurn and his creative guru Ken Martin, Threadlife takes three-second clips, called "stitches," and threads them together to create a montage-like reel of moments. The result is a stream of small moments woven together to form a conversation of sorts.

"Everyone has something that's precious to them, our sense is this is the best way to capture or share … Read more

Color, a mightily hyped mobile application that tried for more than a year to gain a loyal fan base, has finally decided to close its doors, according to a report.

Photo Transfer App doesn't disappoint

Photo Transfer App is one of the simplest solutions I've encountered for transferring photos and videos between mobile and desktop devices -- so long as your devices are all on the same Wi-Fi network.

When you open the app on your device, it immediately asks if you want to send or receive files (only photos and videos are supported). Once you make your choice, it asks if you'll be transferring with an Apple computer, Windows computer, or mobile device (Android or iOS only). Whichever option you choose, your devices will have to be on the same Wi-Fi network … Read more

Tout 15-second video clips

Tout lets you create, share, and watch 15-second video status updates, all from your mobile device. But more than just a video app, Tout is its own self-contained social network, where you can find and follow other users, as well.

Because Tout is all about quickly shooting and sharing short videos, its interface is decidedly simple. There's a large Tout button always at the bottom of the screen, which lets you very quickly shoot and share videos. When you tap it, you can choose to either start recording a new video or upload an existing video from your device. … Read more

Socialcam for Android is a bust

While Socialcam appears to be one of the better video-sharing apps on iOS, I certainly can't say the same about its sibling on the Android platform. After taking some time to review Socialcam for Android, I realized that the app is fraught with problems and in need of some major attention from its developers.

The first problem I encountered was that Socialcam on Android only offers you the option to log in using Facebook, and much of the time even that doesn't work. I tried logging in using two different accounts on two different devices and found this … Read more

Army launches video-sharing site for the military

People serving in the U.S. military now have their own Web site where they can upload, share, and watch videos.

Announced yesterday, the new MilTube site has been set up as a safer, more secure alternative to YouTube, with content protected behind firewalls. As such, it's designed to serve the interests of military personnel who want to share videos but also satisfy the concerns of the Department of Defense (DOD), which has never been comfortable with access to commercial social network and sharing sites.

"Video is an extremely powerful tool for storytelling and sharing information among personnel,&… Read more
