For Samsung Vibrant, no 911 means no Android mod

CyanogenMod has decided to drop support for the Samsung Vibrant after discovering that the phone can't dial 911 running the crew's own open-source Android build.

The CyanogenMod team relayed the bad news on its own forum earlier this week:

We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that … Read more

eBay paying for smartphones

Smartphone users looking to sell their current devices to pick up a new Verizon iPhone will find eBay a willing buyer.

The auction site yesterday launched a special two-week promotion through its Instant Sale feature that offers cash to people willing to sell their current smartphones.

Running through February 22, people can receive at least $200 from eBay by sending in any one of a number of phones, including an AT&T iPhone 3GS, a Motorola Droid X, a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, or an HTC Evo 4G. Those willing to part with an AT&T 32GB iPhone … Read more

Poll: 61 percent of CNET readers want bigger iPhone screen

Maybe bigger is better.

Just a few days ago I wrote an article entitled, "Should the iPhone 5 get a larger screen?" As part of the piece, I included a poll asking readers to cast a vote for their preference. Of the nearly 5,000 respondents, the results (as of the time of this writing) were as follows:

61 percent thought Apple should make the screen larger 30 percent thought the iPhone's screen was just right 2 percent would like to see it get smaller 8 percent didn't care

Compare that with a very similar pollRead more

FCC approves Motorola Atrix 4G, Samsung Vibrant 4G, more

Mere weeks after the Consumer Electronics Show, it appears that the Motorola Atrix 4G has finally earned its seal of approval from the FCC. The model number is MB860 and yes, it does support UMTS 1900Mhz, which AT&T is calling "4G." Another 4G phone to get stamped by the FCC could be the Samsung Vibrant 4G. The Vibrant's model number is the SGH-T959, while the phone seen here has a very similar model number of SGH-T959V. On a non-4G note, it appears Huawei has also let slip its Ideos X6 on the FCC recently. Looks … Read more

Should the iPhone 5 get a larger screen?

Last year, with all the new Android smartphones with 4-inch and larger screens hitting the market, I posted an article asking readers whether they thought the iPhone's screen was too small. In a poll, close to 50 percent of the respondents said, yes, they'd like to see Apple make the next iPhone's screen larger.

Now I'm getting some grief from readers after leaving out "larger screen" when I recently updated my piece on the the 20 feature upgrades I'd like to see in the iPhone 5, so I thought I'd better take … Read more

Samsung and T-Mobile confirm Vibrant 4G

Moments after T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm mentioned the upcoming Samsung Vibrant 4G at a press conference in New York, T-Mobile and Samsung confirmed the news in a press release.

The statement doesn't say much, which makes us think that Humm got ahead of himself in spilling the beans about the Vibrant. T-Mobile won't confirm specs or a release date at the time of this writing, though it promised to reveal more details in the coming weeks.

Yet, we do have an inkling of what the Vibrant 4G should offer. Compatibility with T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network is a … Read more

T-Mobile serving Samsung Vibrant Froyo on January 21

Samsung Vibrant owners may be getting sweeter later this month. T-Mobile will begin updating the Samsung smartphone from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2. Subscribers will begin seeing the long-awaited changes as soon as January 21, though the rollout will come in waves--not everyone will receive a call to update on the same day.

In addition to serving Vibrant owners some good new about the Froyo build, T-Mobile also put to rest a nasty rumor that Samsung has been purposely thwarting the Android 2.2 update.

Samsung's custom skin and T-Mobile's add-on apps are two complications behind … Read more

Samsung responds to claims of holding back Vibrant's Froyo update

This post was updated at 5:27 p.m., PT with comment from T-Mobile.

There's a story circulating the Web today that's causing an uproar among Samsung Vibrant owners and putting Samsung in the hot seat.

According to AndroidSpin, they received a tip from a reliable source that claims that Samsung is preventing T-Mobile from releasing the Android 2.2 Froyo update to Vibrant users in order to push the next-gen Vibrant 4G.

The tipster, who appears to be from within the T-Mobile organization, writes:

Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our "… Read more

T-Mobile to refresh Samsung Vibrant for 4G network

T-Mobile and Samsung appear to be prepping the release of a follow-up to last fall's Vibrant. Dubbed the Vibrant 4G, the Galaxy S device should feature a handful of improvements on its predecessor, most notably support for 21Mbps on T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network.

Other new details include a front-facing camera, Android 2.2 (Froyo), and the inclusion of Qik (video chat) and doubleTwist Air Sync (music, media). And this time around, T-Mobile will preload the movie "Inception" rather than "Avatar." It's also worth pointing out that the carrier appears to be getting into … Read more

10 million Galaxy S phones sold, says Samsung

Samsung has sold 10 million Galaxy S smartphones since their launch in June, according to the company.

That means the Korean phone maker has reached its sales target for the Android-based phones, the company said yesterday in an e-mail to Bloomberg. The phones also helped Samsung boost overall sales and earnings for the third quarter.

Samsung hopes to double smartphone sales this year, driven by both the Galaxy S and the new Nexus S, according to Bloomberg.

Breaking down the results, the company sold more than 4 million Galaxy S devices in North America, around 2.5 million across Europe, … Read more
