The network now blankets several communities outside of Chicago, collectively known as Chicagoland, well as Wichita Falls, Texas, Hutchinson and McPherson, Kan., and New Bedford/Fall River, Mass.

Sprint is racing to catch up to larger rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which last week week exceeded its 400-market target and has more markets covered than every other carrier combined. With consumers demanding a faster connection for Web browsing, music, and video, 4G LTE has become a bigger selling point.

Verizon, Sprint: iPhone 5 can't do voice plus data on 4G LTE

It appears that AT&T will still have an edge on rival carriers when it comes to one key iPhone 5 feature.

The models for both Verizon and Sprint won't let you do other data-hungry tasks while making a phone call on 4G LTE networks. When you're making a voice call on either of the two networks, you'll need to be on Wi-Fi if you want to pull data inside apps, including the Safari Web browser.

"The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while … Read more

Why Verizon 4G LTE smartphones are a bad choice for world travelers

Verizon's latest line-up of 4G LTE smartphones is impressive, but there's one feature these cutting edge smartphones lack: global roaming.

For years, Verizon Wireless customers were unable to use their cell phones while traveling in many parts of the world, because Verizon's technology was incompatible with most of the world's wireless carriers. Then the company started offering a handful of "world phones," which finally allowed Verizon subscribers to roam onto most carrier networks overseas. But now as the carrier pushes its new and existing customers to sign up for 4G LTE service, Verizon is … Read more

Sprint rumored to add more cities for 4G LTE coverage

Although Sprint has been playing catch up with its competitors in securing 4G LTE markets, internal documents imply that the mobile network may be further along in its quest than previously thought.

According to the technology news site TechnoBuffalo, which received the documents, it seems that Sprint's Network Vision campaign has been in progress in Akron, Ohio; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas; Nashville; New York; Rialto, Calif.; and Stockton, Calif., since last year. This means that these markets could possibly be next on the list to get 4G LTE activation.
