Is Creative's 3rd-generation Vado HD pocket camcorder a bargain?
Creative Labs found a niche in the quickly growing pocket camcorder space by bringing out models that cost less than its competitors but offered many of the same features. To a degree, the same holds true for its latest model, which Creative simply calls the Vado HD 3rd Gen.
This model offers 720p HD resolution, 4GB of built-in memory, and an HDMI output in a compact, stylish package that weighs a mere 3.3 ounces. It lists for $179, significantly less than the second-generation Flip Video MinoHD and about the same as the rival Kodak Zi8, which requires you to … Read more

Just how many ways can you get wet? Six, if U.K.-based bathroom brassware maker Vado has its way with the Sculpture--a flexible tentacle-like showerhead that lets you project water spouts in six different directions.
Of course, what you end up with is limited only by your creativity and how deep your pocket is. The contemporary Sculpture can be mounted on the wall or ceiling and comes with a 12-year guarantee (check with Vado for pricing and availability).
Of course, given the amount of water you might be using here, the Sculpture could make an interesting companion piece … Read more
Creative Vado HD vs. Mino HD: Too close to call
Several people have e-mailed me wondering when we'd have our review up of the Creative Vado HD mini camcorder. Well, now it's up, and the big question everyone is asking is whether it's better than the Flip Video Mino HD. The short answer is yes--and no.
Basically, the Vado HD's video quality isn't quite as good the Mino HD's. But its feature set is superior. So, it's a tough call.
Creative readies the Vado HD: Is it better than the Flip Video Mino HD?
Things are heating up in the HD mini camcorder space as Creative gets set to release its new Vado HD next week. The camcorder retains many of the design traits of the original Vado but it doesn't share the exact same body. However, it does have something that neither the Kodak Zi6 nor the Flip Video Mino HD has: an HDMI connection (plus an included cable) for outputting 1080i video to your HDTV. And it comes with 8GB of built-in memory--all for around $200.
In our review of the Vado, we knocked it a bit for being pretty no … Read more
New RCA Small Wonder video cams now available
The latest iteration of RCA's Small Wonder video cameras is now available. Along with Creative's just-released $99 Vado, the new trio of Small Wonders is competing with Flip Video's popular budget cams, which--by some estimates--have snagged up to one-eighth of the overall camcorder market.
We liked how previous Small Wonder models had a flip-out LCD, and we're happy to report that two of the new models sport this feature. It's also worth noting that all the models have some form of removable memory, which means you can always carry around an extra card with you to store more videos. Alas, RCA hasn't gone with a rechargeable battery--but the new models are pretty affordable. Two come in at less than $100, while the splash-resistant Traveler model comes in at $149.99.
There was some talk at CES about the EZ300HD, a Small Wonder that would allegedly shoot at "HD" resolution (1,280 x 720). However, that model hasn't materialized yet.
Here's the lineup: … Read more

Creative introduces superslim Flip competitor
With the success of the Flip Video Ultra, a lot more companies are taking a hard look at the budget video camera market, and Tuesday Creative jumped into the fray with its $99 Vado Pocket Video Cam.
From what we can tell from the news release, the Vado offers features very similar to the Flip Video Ultra. However, the Vado comes with 2GB of built-in memory and a removable rechargeable battery for less money. Creative also claims that the sub 3-ounce Vado is "dramatically thinner and lighter than competing video cameras," which we assume means the Flip Video … Read more
