Cisco ceasing sales of Umi video hardware

Cisco Systems is pulling the plug on another one of its video-centric consumer products.

The communications company today acknowledged that it has ceased sales of its Umi video-conferencing hardware, which it introduced in October 2010.

"While we are ending the sale of Umi, the Umi service remains unchanged," a Cisco spokesperson told CRN in a statement. "Existing customers will continue to be able to use the service to make calls to other Umi subscribers or to Google video chat accounts."

CRN reports that the shelving of the hardware formally began last month.

Cisco cuts pricing on HD home video conferencing

Cisco Systems said today that it will cut the price of its consumer video-conferencing product called Umi.

The product, which first hit the market in October, will now come in two versions. The original product, which transmits video in 1080p resolution, will cost $499 instead of $599. And the company will offer a $399 version that offers 720p video resolution. There will also be a free software client available for PCs and Macs later this year.

The service will be reduced from $25 a month to $99 for the year or $9.95 a month.

Cisco Systems unveiled Cisco Umi today, its consumer-focused telepresence offering that lets people connect to each other using videoconferencing on their HD television in their living rooms.

Cisco Umi (pronounced YOU-me) is a telecommunications system that requires a mix of Cisco hardware and hardware you'll already need to own. Intel discloses new mobile processors, pricing

Intel has updated its processor pricing list with new Core i series chips, including the widely used Core i5 and i7.

The processor update, dated September 26, includes two Core i5 mobile chips for laptops: the i5-580M and the i5-560M. The 2.66Hz i5-580M (3M L2 cache, two cores, four threads) is priced at $266, while the i5-560M (same clock speed) is priced at $225.
