MacBook Air, ultrabook chips coming as second Intel launch

Ivy Bridge chips for laptops like the MacBook Air, the Dell XPS 13 ultrabook, and HP Envy series will come in a second wave, Intel's CEO said today during the company's first-quarter earnings conference call.

"The first versions of Ivy Bridge that we're shipping are quad-cores," CEO Paul Otellini said during the call today. "And then the second launch of the products is the dual core, which is the mainstream notebooks," he added.

The first launch will happen on Monday, the second launch is likely in June. That's the timeframe that a … Read more

Intel offers clarification on 'Ivy Bridge' chip delay

Intel today spelled out in more exacting detail just what the Ivy Bridge chip delay means in the wake of comments published Sunday from an Intel executive.

"Reports of an eight-week delay to the Ivy Bridge launch are inaccurate and our schedule has only been impacted by a few weeks," spokesman Jon Carvill told CNET today.

So, for instance, if a desktop Ivy Bridge product was slated for an April launch, that would be pushed to May. And a mobile product scheduled for May, would launch in June. Intel always staggers production schedules. For example, Intel's most … Read more

Acer's Ultrabook to rattle market at $899, says report

Acer is expected to shake up the nascent Ultrabook market when a model lands in the U.S. in the coming weeks at prices well below $1,000, according to a report.

New Age Electronics is now listing the Aspire S series at prices starting at $899.99, according to a report in CRN.

Ultrabooks, like Apple's MacBook Air, are thin, minimalist laptops but offer high performance due to the use of Intel's latest Sandy Bridge processor. … Read more

Hands-on with the new Dell Vostro V130

Last year, the Dell Vostro V13 was an affordable small-business laptop surprise, a thin 13-incher that amounted to an affordable Adamo for budget shoppers. Dell's holiday update, the Vostro V130, keeps the same aluminum and magnesium-alloy flat design as the V13, but gives the innards a boost. We have one here at CNET, and we've been trying it out leading up to a forthcoming review.

The V130, like many Dell laptops, comes in a variety of configurations starting affordable and ranging up to the pricey. Our V130 has a Core i5 ULV processor, which runs about half the … Read more

First look: Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118, an 11.6-inch powerhouse

We said we were noticing a trend in 2010 toward "premium" Netbooks, and that's no joke--it seems as we begin our final descent through this calendar year that true ultraportable laptops are back, in a big way.

The $899 Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118 looks like a Netbook from the outside, just slightly bigger. An 11.6-inch glossy screen and a full-size flat keyboard are contained cozily in a narrow lightweight chassis with little bulk, resembling an Acer TimelineX in miniature. A six-cell battery is tucked above the keyboard and between the screen hinges, reducing bottom bulk. With … Read more

Rumor: 11.6-inch MacBook Air on the way

Frequent rumor source DigiTimes is reporting that Apple plans to release a new MacBook Air later in 2010. According to a brief article published Thursday, the revamped MacBook Air will feature an 11.6-inch screen, a ULV version of one of Intel's Core-i series processors, and be even thinner than the current MacBook Air.

DigiTimes quotes one of its internal analysts as saying, "The 11.6-inch MacBook Air will feature an even slimmer and lighter design than the previous-generation models and the technologies used for the design and concept are expected to be broadly used in the company'… Read more

Acer ditches ULV for Core i3, i5 on Timeline X

As "thin-and-light" laptop releases grow fewer and farther between, Acer has decided to stay the course on slim while largely abandoning its ultra low-voltage CPU for the full-voltage Core i-series in a new line of laptops called the Timeline X. The Timeline X models have screens ranging in size from 13 inches to 15 inches,  costs start at $599,  use Core i3 or i5 processors, and they have a black brushed-aluminum look. On the 14- and 15-inch models, Acer includes internal optical drives; however, the 13-inch Timeline X won't have the drive.

New Intel processors: More powerful Netbooks, what else?

It's always a bit hard to tell just from gazing at CPU specs what exactly we'll see in coming laptops, but Intel's leaked road map of upcoming laptop processors, which provides information on products through 2011, does provide a few hints and interesting notes.

Intel's various geographic code names and ultra-detailed spec charts can get a little sleep-inducing for the average consumer. To boil it down, here are the points that seem most eye-opening, and that could truly pave the way for some cooler laptops down the road.

Things to be excited about in 2010:

Digital City 83: Yankee Stadium bans iPads; new laptop CPUs; losing it over 'Lost'

Don't bother taking your iPad to Yankee Stadium--it's banned the device, along with other laptops. Also, Intel announces new ULV chips; Asus bundles Kindle software on laptops; and [Spoiler Alert] we skip out on the "Lost" island for the last time.

Also, for reasons too complex to go into here, we end up discussing, and digging up the opening sequence from, the '80s sci-fi TV cult classic "Automan" (it's basically Desi Arnaz Jr. meets "Tron").

Our current video game obsession is Red Dead Redemption, and not satisfied to merely play the … Read more

Intel targets laptop Holy Grail with Core ULV chips

New Core i3, i5, and i7 ultralow-voltage processors have officially been announced by Intel. Consuming less power than standard-voltage Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, they're also slightly less powerful. We saw a similar move last year with Core 2 Duo ULV chips such as the SU7300, which wasn't as fast as a standard Core 2 Duo, but helped smaller laptops attain a higher battery life. We saw that processor in laptops ranging from the Alienware M11x to the 13-inch Lenovo ThinkPad Edge.

Though the spin on the news so far has emphasized "ultrathin" laptops, it'… Read more
