As Black Friday approaches and everyone readies their wallet for the next big holiday deal, remember that it's getting increasingly difficult to spot good laptop innards from, well, less ideal ones. We've made this point before with the most frequent culprit of the Black Friday Doorbuster...the Celeron processor. Many 15-inch laptops that are advertised at about $300 or less are practically guaranteed to have this elderly single-core CPU at its core, but in the case of the Celeron, all you have to do is keep an eye out for that Celeron sticker on the display model.

Asus debuting family of thin, light laptops

Asus is the latest PC maker to hit the market with its own line of thin, light laptops.

The Taiwanese company revealed its new family of notebooks at a news conference in Taipei on Monday. The ASUS UnLimited, or UL, laptops measure less than 24.5 millimeters (one inch) thick and weigh anywhere from 3.3 to 4.6 pounds, depending on the model.

Alarm systems at risk: UL establishes a higher security requirement for magnetic switches

The U.S. product safety testing organization Underwriters Laboratories has redefined the security requirements for magnetic switches used in many alarm systems because some of these devices can be easily defeated. If your facility employs reed switches or Balanced Magnetic Switches (the high-security version of these devices) you may wish to review the requirements of the new standard. UL 634 has established a second security level (2) to define more stringent requirements to protect against covert attack. Current BMS switches are covered under Level 1.
