Twitter for Mac gets Retina display support and renewed commitment

After nearly two years of neglect, Twitter has finally refreshed its Mac desktop application with a few new features.

Thursday, the company released a Mac app with simplified photo-sharing options, support for Retina displays, and 14 new languages.

"Now Twitter is even more vibrant and detailed on the highest resolution Mac notebooks," Ben Sandofsky, product lead, wrote about the Retina addition. "With this update, Tweets will be clearer and sharper, creating a more vivid experience."

The enhanced application and accompanying blog post, which promises additional improvements, should allay some concerns around the application's imminent end. … Read more

Twitter debuts official iPhone app

The iPhone app formerly known as Tweetie has a new name and a new owner.

Twitter hit the iPhone market Wednesday with its first official app, dubbed simply Twitter for the iPhone. But the new app is actually just the 3.0 update of Tweetie 2.0, which the company got hold of after acquiring Tweetie developer Atebits in April.

Though it's hardly a revolutionary upgrade, the new 3.0 version sports a few small changes over Tweetie 2.0. First off, it's free--Tweetie 2.0 set you back $2.99, even if you upgraded from a previous … Read more

Et tu, Twitter? Here comes developer ire

This was, to put it plainly, not a great week for many developers. Modifications to Apple's software development kit license for its just-announced iPhone OS 4 software ban non-approved application program interfaces (APIs), including Adobe's Flash Compiler. That decision led Adobe's platform evangelist to blurt out an incensed "Go screw yourself, Apple" blog post.

But unrelated, and more surprising--OK, not really that surprising since we'd been able to augur the entrails of this one for some time now--is Twitter's decision to launch proprietary BlackBerry and iPhone apps. The former was built for … Read more

Track your tweets with iPhone app Tweetie

Say Tweetie, and most folks think: "I tawt I taw a puddy tat."

But as a social-networking kinda guy, Tweetie is the name of my favorite iPhone Twitter app.

Tweetie lets you access all the standard Twitter features on your iPhone. You can see and respond to the tweets you follow, post your own tweets, and search for tweets by keyword.

Tweetie has always offered a clean, simple interface. But with its newly-redesigned version 2.0, the app is even friendlier. The buttons to tweet, check mentions of your name, send a direct mail (DM), and search for … Read more

Tweetie 2 worth the upgrade

Tweetie 2 is the second version of the popular Twitter client for iPhone/iPod Touch and is a complete rewrite of original. It's also one of the most controversial updates in Apple's App Store history. Since Apple has no paid upgrade option for its mobile software, developer Atebits instead offered Tweetie 2 as an all-new app, forcing owners of the previous version to pay out again.

It's worth the $2.99 price, though. It's noticeably faster than the previous iteration, and easier to use, too. It saves its state between tweeting sessions so that if you … Read more

Apple to let naughty words flow on Tweetie 1.3

Apple has apparently had a change of heart about a Twitter iPhone app that sometimes presents users with language some might find objectionable.

The popular Twitter app for iPhone and iPod touch--called Tweetie 1.3--was apparently rejected because it gives users access to the Twitter Trends section, which displays the most frequent topics or words on Twitter at any given moment. This section sometimes lists swear words--including a particular four-letter word that begins with the letter F--that apparently raised Apple's disdain.

In an e-mail earlier Tuesday, app developer Loren Brichter said Apple quoted this part of the company's … Read more
