Searching for a bargain on the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

What's better than getting a great deal on one of the hottest smartphones on the market? How about getting a good deal on two of these devices.

In this edition of Ask Maggie I help one reader get the best deal I could find on the Motorola Razr Maxx, one of my favorite Google Android devices on the market. And I help another reader, who wants the most social smartphone around, decide if Windows Phone is right for him.

Dear Maggie, My girlfriend and I both have HTC Incredibles. We are both due for an upgrade on March 21. … Read more

Windows Phone 7 Challenge: Week 2, the verdict

It's the end of my second week of life with Windows Phone 7 Mango, and it's time to render a verdict. I should say at the outset that two weeks doesn't sound like a lot of time to live with an entirely new platform, and I might have lasted longer but for serious problems with the HTC Trophy I've been using (one-day record for spontaneous reboots: 15, including 3 in 15 minutes). That said, since my smartphone is a device I'm using almost constantly, I feel like I got to know the thing pretty well. … Read more

Windows Phone 7 Challenge: End of Week 1 (updated)

It's the end of the first full week of my Windows Phone 7 Challenge (catch up with previous installments here), and in simple summary, my feelings on Windows Phone 7 Mango are decidedly mixed--with the exception of the Maps and navigation, which I despise. Read on for that. Oh, and I wish it had a screen capture feature, which would make these blog posts a lot easier.

It's probably easiest to do a simple list of pros and cons. And, for context, this week has just been about setting up the phone, establishing basic use, getting familiar with … Read more

Windows Phone 7 challenge: I can haz apps, please?

Here's the latest update from the world of Windows Phone 7: upshot? Uh oh...where are the apps?

Also, as a post-script, I should say that although I liked the integrated social networking at first, I'm finding it slightly less useful as the day wears on. It seems slow to update; the list of Twitter mentions only says I was mentioned, but doesn't show me the actual text until I click through to another screen; and it's kind of weird to have one live tile for monitoring Facebook posts, and another for monitoring my own Facebook … Read more

Windows Phone 7 Challenge: Week 1

Everything was fine in Android-land until the Gingerbread update. Well, then again, "fine" might be a little strong.

I'd been through an original Motorola Droid, which was a nice little keyboard wrapped in a seriously slow-performing phone with a terrible camera and no end of software update woes.

I went from that to the Samsung Fascinate, wooed by its sleek looks, great camera, and big, beautiful screen. Sadly, the Fascinate was loaded down with carrier crapware, including the staggering inclusion of Bing instead of Google as the default system search. It was so crippled you couldn't … Read more

HTC Trophy launches as Verizon's first Windows Phone device

Verizon has been on a tear lately, with the recent announcements of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the Motorola Droid X2, and now you can add the HTC Trophy to the list.

Launching as Verizon's first Windows Phone device, the Trophy will be available online starting May 26 and in stores on June 2 for $149.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate. To sweeten the deal even more, customers who buy the smartphone before July 15 will get a free Xbox 360 console game and can choose from Halo: Reach, Kinect Sports, and Lode … Read more

Release dates surface for Moto Droid X2; Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

A little red birdie has passed on possible release dates for some of Verizon Wireless's most-anticipated smartphones. And since that birdie gave us reliable information before (mainly, the HTC Incredible 2's April 28 debut), we're inclined to believe that the following dates will hold up. So here's what we know.

The HTC Trophy is scheduled to arrive May 12. Verizon promised late least year that it was bringing Windows Phone 7 to its handset stable, but the carrier has yet to show us the goods despite earlier false alarms. Bonnie Cha has reviewed the unlocked GSM versionRead more

PS3 console errors fixed, leap year bug to blame

Reports are still scattered, but after testing our own PS3, it appears the global 8001050F error that left most non-Slim PS3 consoles essentially unplayable seems to be fixed. We're guessing this issue was corrected on the server side of things, as there was no update or download required; our console just worked.

Even better, all trophy and game save data remains intact, so worries about corrupted information can be put to rest.

We still don't have an official word from Sony, but it looks like the worst is behind us. That said, we'd still recommend waiting for … Read more

Hot Sun, Hot Cars and Hot Chicks: 2009 SCORE Terrible's Primm 300

At the tail end of this last week, I used my blog to preview the SCORE International off road trophy truck race Terrible's Primm 300 that took place over this last weekend in Nevada. Well, the 14th edition of this race has been run, and the results are in - of over 100 trucks to start the race, roughly 60% completed the grueling off road terrain with Robby Gordon coming in at 1st Place.

Y'know dear readers, I must admit it's sometimes difficult to find quality web video within a short turnaround time in order to present … Read more
