Zu Audio's outrageously awesome speaker

It's been a few years since I wrote my last Zu Audio speaker review, but this time out I wanted to try their least expensive tower, and that's where things got interesting.

The Zu Audio Omen Standard and Omen Dirty Weekend (DW) are virtual twins, but with one very significant difference: the DW uses "recycled" drivers. That is, the DW drivers come from Zu customers who traded up to one of Zu's higher-end drivers. Let's stop right there: Zu Audio is one of the rare speaker companies to offer upgrades in any form, but … Read more

Sonically speaking, what does a great speaker sound like?

It comes up again and again: "Steve, please recommend a great speaker." Good question, but there are a lot of factors to consider before coming up with a definitive answer. A lot depends on what you're looking for and how you define "great." Nailing down the price is the first step, but if there's one thing I've learned about audiophiles, it's that taste always plays a big part in evaluating sound quality. That's why, in my reviews, I describe how a speaker sounds with different kinds of music.

The sequel to the best in tower defense brings more great gameplay

Kingdom Rush Frontiers (iPhone|iPad) is the sequel to hit tower defense game Kingdom Rush, keeping the same great gameplay with fun improvements and extras, but I wish it had a bit more.

Just like the original, Kingdom Rush Frontiers is set in a fantasy world where you'll battle cartoonlike mythical monsters hell-bent on destroying your kingdom. As a fixed-path tower defense game, you'll be required to choose from four different types of upgradable buildings with varying damage types to keep the evil invaders at bay. Each level has a set number of available emplacements, so it's … Read more

Review: Space Tower Defender pits you against enemy ships

Space Tower Defender is not a tower defense game; rather it is a fast paced turret game in which you must destroy wave after wave of enemies before they can reach you. The quick setup, ease of entry into the mechanics, and enjoyable theme all make it a very well executed game that will keep you entertained for hours.

In Space Tower Defender, you will occupy a tower in the center of the game screen. You can turn the tower and fire by tapping anywhere on the screen around you. This is important, because shortly after starting, enemies start appearing. … Read more

Apple's big Mac Pro revamp to debut this month, report says

Mac Pro users who have played the waiting game with Apple to completely revamp its desktop machine might get the goods soon, according to a new report.

Citing an accurate source, Mac Daily News says Apple plans to announce a new model of the machine sometime this month.

An Apple spokesman told CNET the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Mac Daily News warns that the April date could "slip" all the way through June, which is when Apple is expected to once again hold its annual developers conference in San Francisco. A source familiar with … Read more

Block building, tower defense, and first-person mayhem in one game

Block Fortress is a great mix of tower defense and first-person shooter that lets you build a home base with turrets and other defenses, then play in first person while you help defend your blocky base. It's an incredibly deep game, but the way the developers named the game types is a bit confusing on first play.

The graphics in the game are almost exactly like those in the hit game Minecraft, with tons of different block types to unlock and use to defend your fortress. Fans of Minecraft will feel right at home during the building phase of … Read more

Coming soon: Plants vs. Zombies for Facebook and a sequel

Game maker Popcap today revealed Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (PvZA) beta for Facebook, but gamers might be more interested in the mention of Plants vs. Zombies 2.

The social spinoff PvZA takes gardeners out of the backyard (the primary setting in the first game) and sends them on the road to fight off ravenous zombies. To freshen up gameplay, Popcap enhanced the title with new plants, zombies, and defenses, as well as the implementation of social features that include leaderboards and community challenges. … Read more

Icy Tower 2 is fun for the whole family

Our favorites games tend to be the simple, mindless ones because we typically play them while trying to kill time. Icy Tower 2 certainly falls under that category. Its simple gameplay will keep you entertained for hours.

We did notice that Icy Tower 2 took about 30 seconds to load. An instructional intro walks you through the game's controls. For example, tilting the phone to the left and right moves the character; tilting it a bit more makes him jump higher. The object of the game is to jump higher and higher on platforms to reach the top of … Read more

Ordinary man gets blamed when Sprint customers lose phones

If I were Wayne Dobson, I'd move house. I'd move a few blocks away from his Las Vegas home. Or I'd leave Las Vegas altogether.

Dobson, you see, suffers constantly by virtue exclusively of where he lives.

Angry Sprint customers turn up at his door and demand he gives them their cell phones back.

He doesn't have their cell phone. He doesn't have anyone's cell phone. He doesn't even own a cell phone.

As the Las Vegas Review-Journal painfully portrays it, 59-year-old Dobson is at his wit's end.

However, he's also … Read more
