Bing Augmented Reality team building SDK, tablet apps

The Microsoft Bing team is doing more than building a search engine that competes head-to-head with Google.

Part of the team, as I've blogged previously, also built some of the first Microsoft-branded consumer apps for Windows 8.

But it turns out there's another team inside the Bing organization that is working on Windows 8 apps, too. There's an Augmented Reality (AR) team inside Bing that is building both an AR framework and AR applications that will ship on Windows 8 tablets and other unspecified devices.

Remote-vision quadcopter soars over LeWeb

PARIS -- LeWeb's focus this year on "the Internet of things" this year brought Net-enabled door locks, houseplant monitors, and footstep loggers to the conference stage. But the gadget that caught the most attention was a remote-controlled quadcopter.

Quadcopters are all the rage these days, popularized best by the Parrot AR.Drone. Here at LeWeb, startup Team BlackSheep showed its take on the tech with a model that's remotely piloted by an operator who sees what's going on from a camera mounted on the drone itself.

Raphael Pirker, founder of the company, piloted a TBS … Read more

iOS 6.0.1 already jailbroken -- for some devices

iOS 6.0.1 users can now jailbreak their devices, but there are some bumps in the road.

The latest version of the iPhone Dev Team's Redsn0w can jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 devices, Redmond Pie confirmed today after testing the update.

However, not everyone can take advantage of the effort at this point.

The jailbreak works only on iOS devices powered by an A4 chip or lower. People who own the iPhone 5, the newest iPads, or the latest iPod Touch are out of luck. The jailbreak takes advantage of the Limera1n exploit, which can't handle the … Read more

Bing map shows CIA's secret Bin Laden compound mock-up

In 2011, Navy Seal Team Six was prepping for a possible raid to capture or kill a high-value target living in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The target, of course, was Osama bin Laden. A satellite image of the training facility located in Perquimans County, N.C., (via the Atlantic Wire and cyptome.org ) was captured by Microsoft's Bing search as it was ramping up its satellite data.

It's identified on the map as the Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity, near the Albemarle Sound.

The staged Bin Laden compound closely resembles the actual compound below:

Hackers vow 'hellfire' in latest major data leak

A group of hackers has released a vast quantity of data from banks, government agencies, consulting firms and many others and promised more data leaks in the future.

"Team GhostShell's final form of protest this summer against the banks, politicians and for all the fallen hackers this year," the group, which calls itself -- you guessed it -- "Team GhostShell," wrote in a Pastebin post titled "Project HellFire" this weekend. Fifty-two percent expect to work on vacation, survey says

The work-life balance often seems like a seesaw, with a grossly overfed boss sitting at one end.

There seems little respect either for personal time or even vacation time, because your time isn't your time. It's time you sold to the highest bidder.

So much so that the majority of U.S. employees expect to have to work on vacation. Well, it is paid vacation, isn't it?

I am privileged to have been passed a survey commissioned by TeamViewer. This is a company that is officially responsible for remote access software, but is uncommonly dedicated to commissioning Harris Interactive Read more
