Backyard tinkerer Grant Thompson teaches us how to build a solar-powered death ray. A man gets a Netflix tattoo for life and only gets a measly one-year subscription for it. Plus, we meet Mr. Stubbs the alligator, the first reptile (that we know of, at least) to receive a prosthetic tail. Donation came from the Phoenix Herpetological Society and the Core Institute. … Read more

Man gets Netflix tattoo, scores free year of Netflix

We've all been taught that our actions have consequences. Sometimes, you get a silly tattoo and earn a lifetime of regret. Other times, you get a silly tattoo and earn a free yearlong Netflix subscription.

Myron Robinson appears to have gotten a tattoo of the Netflix logo embellished with a background of paisley shapes, all done in gray-scale ink. He posted it on Twitter along with a plea for the video company to put him in a commercial. Netflix took notice and got right back to him with this reply:… Read more

RIM superfan keeps faith alive with BlackBerry 10 tattoo

What's likely to trigger more regret 10 years down the road -- a tattooed profile of that special someone who broke your heart and took your favorite records, or a permanent etching of an obsolete operating system that some critics thought was already bordering on irrelevance when it was brand new?

Most of us would probably just opt to skip both options, but not Brian Heffren of Middleton, N.Y. He's chosen to go all in on BlackBerry 10, which launches tomorrow, by getting the new mobile OS logo tattooed on his shoulder forever. Ladies, take note. This is a guy who understands what commitment is all about.… Read more

This smiley face tattoo is monitoring you

A Ph.D. student at the University of Toronto is using the same transfer paper currently affixing temporary tattoos to kids -- in conjunction with a common screen-printing technique -- to develop a medical sensor that keeps tabs on a person's exertion by monitoring the skin's pH levels.

Similar devices, which are called ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), are already common among athletic trainers and medical researchers to help spot fatigue, dehydration, or even metabolic diseases. But they tend to be bulky and don't stick well to sweaty skin.

The new sensor stays put and doesn't look so, … Read more

Fanboi fruit: Real apples with Apple logos

It's such a delicious idea for a meme, I can't believe I haven't seen it before. An apple orchard in Japan has taken to "tan-tooing" its sweet fruit with Apple images and logos.

Apparently the fruit growers put stickers on the apples before they were fully ripe, allowing them to darken around the insignia of the company that has most definitely stolen the actual apple's thunder of late.… Read more

Researchers unveil ultra-thin electronics that dissolve in body

The same researchers who last year developed "electronic tattoos" that bend and stretch on skin are now unveiling similar ultra-thin electronics, only these dissolve when their job is done.

Made of silicon, magnesium, and magnesium oxide and surrounded by a protective layer of silk, these "transient" electronics aren't built to last but rather to melt away and, in the process, reduce the need to pass or surgically remove tiny medical implants, researchers from Tufts and the University of Illinois write in the current issue of Science.

The researchers -- who have begun using their devices … Read more

Wireless tooth tattoo can detect bad bacteria

Some tech just sounds too good to be true. A removable, wireless sensor that adheres to dental enamel and can detect trace amounts of harmful bacteria just might fall into the too-much-information category for the squeamish among us.

But the silk, gold, and graphene-based sensor that looks a bit like a temporary tattoo could play a key role in detecting and treating various diseases and conditions, the developers at Princeton University say.

"This is a real-time, wireless response from a sensor that can be directly interfaced with a variety of biomaterials," principal investigator Michael McAlpine, an assistant professor … Read more

Instattoo: Developer uses own app to design his tattoo

Toyo practices what he preaches. The developer of tattoo design-generating app Instattoo got inked with one of his app's designs, according to iSmashPhone.

Instattoo is geared for people who don't draw. It works a little bit like a kaleidoscope. Pick a pattern, style, and size, and rotate the design around until you find something you like. The sheer number of variations means you're not likely to end up with the same tattoo as another Instattoo user.… Read more
