Sony comes clean on worldwide Android 4.0 tablet update

One must wonder why Sony cannot get out of the habit of playing a fragmented and behind-the-curve Android release schedule for its devices.

Finally putting speculation to rest, a Sony representative confirmed with Crave today (and subsequently on Twitter) that Sony tablet owners in "all regions will have Android 4.0 by end of May." And on a related note, a Sony Japan statement announced a May 24 drop date for Android 4.0 landing on both Tablet S and Tablet P devices specifically in that country, perhaps a timeframe we should expect elsewhere.

To recap, see if you can keep up with this: … Read more

New iPad ranked top tablet by Consumer Reports

The latest iPad has a new fan, namely Consumer Reports.

Apple's latest tablet scored the highest ratings among its rivals in a report out today from the consumer publication.

The new iPad was commended for its 5-megapixel camera, battery life, and 4G coverage through Verizon Wireless. But it was the high-resolution screen that earned the sharpest praise.

Citing the detail and color accuracy of the Retina Display, Consumer Reports said that the screen "establishes a new benchmark in excellence" and is "the best we've seen" on a tablet. Specifically, the publication found that the … Read more

The Sony Tablet P and Tablet S will get Android 4.0.3 in late April, according to a Sony Japan press release. Sony did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment regarding plans for the Android update stateside.

Those who own a Sony tablet undoubtedly hope the company follows suit with the same timeframe for the update elsewhere.

As usual, the software engineers at Sony baked several goodies into the Android update. … Read more

Sony Tablet P: At what price dual screens?

"The Sony DS?" That was my first choice for the headline of this piece, but I felt it was a bit too cute and somewhat misleading.

No, it's not the Sony DS, but it does have dual screens, but do dual screens improve or hinder the tablet experience?

Design The first thing you'll notice about the Sony Tablet P is the dual-screen, hinge-based design that allows the tablet to be compacted, like a clam shell.… Read more

Rumored prices for HTC Titan II, Sony Tablet P emerge

The latest rumors from Boy Genius Report suggest some juicy details about AT&T's planned devices for the first quarter of 2012.

BGR indicates AT&T is gearing up to offer yet another Windows Phone device on March 18: the 4G-equipped HTC Titan II at $199. There's word that the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, Samsung Exhilarate, and Sony Xperia Ion also will debut on the carrier toward the end of March, but pricing is unknown.

Lastly, the rumors note that a Sony tablet (code-named Crystal) with HSPA+ will launch on AT&T for $409. I fully believe that Crystal is the dual-screen Sony Tablet P that has evaded a U.S. launch (despite being available in Japan for several months now).

There aren't any sources listed for the rumored information, but BGR has built a bit of a reputation for itself with several credible road map leaks in the past. Regardless, we still recommend you take this news with a grain of salt until things become official. … Read more

Sony tablets now available for preorder

On the same day it officially announced its upcoming Android touch-screen tablets, Sony today opened a preorder page for those wishing to purchase one of the devices originally code-named S1 and S2.

The single-screen Sony Tablet S will be available on September 16 in two varieties: a 16GB version for $499 or a 32GB model for $599. It's worth noting that you can also expand the storage space further via the built-in full-size SD card slot.

Somewhat amusingly, until October 1, consumers can "trade in any brand tablet and get a $100 credit towards a new Sony Tablet S series," according to Sony.

If the dual-screen Tablet P is more to your liking, it is also available for preorder. There's no mention of pricing or release date on the Sony Store site, and in his hands-on preview of both tablets, CNET Senior Editor Donald Bell says that "since the device will come to market through AT&T as a 4G-compatible tablet, the decision on timing and pricing rests on the carrier's shoulders." On a side note, the storage space for the Tablet P is listed as a mere 4GB, but expandable with a full-size SD card slot.
