Microsoft Surface edges out Samsung in display tests

Microsoft's Surface RT tablet topped Samsung's Galaxy tablet in a "shoot-out" done by display testing firm DisplayMate Technologies.

The Surface RT's display outperformed all of the standard resolution full size 10-inch tablets that DisplayMate has tested to date in its Shoot-Out series, Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, said in a research note today.

"On-screen text is significantly sharper, it has a better factory display calibration, and also significantly lower screen reflectance than the iPad 2 and all full size 1,280x800 Android tablets," Soneira said in a statement.

Apple: Expand the ban on Samsung's Galaxy Tab

In a filing earlier today, picked up by Bloomberg, Apple said it wants to extend an earlier injunction on Samsung's Wi-Fi-only 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet to encompass the cellular version as well.

Apple cites the jury verdict from last week, which found the Wi-Fi version of that tablet to infringe on three of Apple's "feature" (i.e., software) patents. The 4G version of the tablet was also on the verdict form, but the jury didn't find that it infringed any of Apple's design (i.e., hardware) patents. … Read more

Samsung asks judge to lift ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung, aiming to find a silver lining in its devastating court loss to Apple, has asked a court to remove its previously ordered sales ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

The company yesterday filed that motion with a federal court in San Jose, according to Bloomberg, which obtained the court documents. The company cited Friday's landmark ruling, in which a jury found that Samsung had not actually violated a patent that caused a ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Back in June, Apple posted a $2.6 million bond that paved the way for it to enforce a preliminary injunctionRead more

Sales ban on Samsung's tablet remains in U.S. until trial

Samsung's latest effort to get the U.S. sales ban of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 lifted was derailed today.

As intellectual property tracking blog FOSS Patents points out, this decision was coupled with another rejection (PDF) of Samsung's request to expedite an appeal on the matter.

A U.S. judge today rejected Samsung's appeal of a preliminary injunction against U.S. sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1, according to Reuters.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh granted an Apple request last week for a preliminary injunction against the Android-powered tablet, largely considered a front-runner to challenge the iPad. Samsung had asked the court to suspend the order pending resolution of an appeal.

While Apple has already posted a $2.6 million bond as required to initiate the injunction, that doesn't necessarily mean sales of the tablet will immediately cease in the U.S. … Read more
