Hunt and gather: News consumption in the 21st century

After the tragic Boston Marathon Bombing, earlier this week, and with the current pursuit of the MIT shooter, law enforcement, news agencies, and the netizens of America rallied together and demonstrated just how interactive the news has become.

Late into the night, I was glued to my computer, with one window showing a live newscast, a Twitter feed of Watertown running in another, and, of course, Reddit. I watched and read with concentrated obsession: there was an emotional whirlwind in my head of concern for my friends in Boston and at MIT, a blend of urgency and excitement as the … Read more

TuneIn launches TuneIn Live for Web and iPad

The increasingly popular TuneIn streaming-radio service today gets a new feature that helps users better customize their listening experience. Dubbed TuneIn Live, the feature is available now both on the TuneIn Web site and in the updated iPad app.

On TuneIn's homepage, TuneIn Live can be found via a small Edit button atop the featured-content tiles. Once your interests are marked, the tiles update to show only stations that you might like.… Read more

Myxer Social Radio gets friendly with streaming app

There's a new way to tap into the music tastes of your Facebook friends.

Myxer.com, a leading site for ringtones and media for phones, is shifting gears into the streaming music space. This week it launched Myxer Social Radio, a Web site and mobile app for streaming custom themed radio stations. The twist: invite friends to your station, called a room, and chat about the music.

Users also get a real-time activity feed of what their Facebook friends are listening to on Myxer, and can jump into a friend's room at any time. If a user is … Read more

Wolfgang's Vault concert app hits Boxee

Fans of live music and Boxee's free media-streaming software have reason to celebrate today.

No, it's not the Boxee set-top box (though they really should get cracking on that thing before Google spoils the party). Instead, users have access to a new streaming-music app that draws from the cherished Wolfgang's Vault catalog.

With live concert recordings that date from the 1940s to present day, the Wolfgang's Vault Web site has a loyal following of music fans. The Boxee app version of the music service (pictured above) repackages the archives of the vault into an attractive, easily … Read more

Record any audio output

WireTap Studio is an excellent, relatively inexpensive audio-capture tool that can help you record, edit, and export any audio on your Mac, whether from your overall system audio, a specific app (like Skype or iTunes), or even an external microphone.

For simple tasks, like recording an iChat conversation, you can access many of WireTap Studio's features directly from its streamlined Controller window--including a very cool Live Preview, which lets you hear what your audio will sound like before you start recording (even as you switch formats, compression rates, and more, on the fly). The rest of WireTap Studio's … Read more

Standalone Pandora

PandoraMan is a tiny app that lets you run the streaming-music service Pandora outside of--and without even opening--your Web browser.

Using Apple's WebKit engine, PandoraMan runs as a standalone app, and the interface is just a subset of the Flash-based Pandora window that you normally see when you go to the Pandora site: you see your stations, your current music stream, and playback controls, and you are automatically logged in after you first open the app. You can switch and make changes to stations, but if you click on any of the other drop-down features (for example, to search … Read more

Jelli's crowd-sourced radio opens up to the U.S., Australia

Jelli.net, a Total Request Live-esq Internet radio station, is coming out of beta on Monday night and is expected to announce that it's inked a syndication deal with Triton Digital Media that will get it played in actual terrestrial FM radio stations across the U.S. beginning next year.

The service revolves entirely around a playlist of songs that's managed by users in real time. Users can vote songs up or down before they ever hit the air, as well as when they're playing. If enough people downvote a song while it's in the … Read more

Sports radio done right

Though only in its infancy, ESPN's sports radio app gets it right. It loads quickly, with ESPN's telltale ticker along the bottom that spits out headlines and scores for one sport after another. You can read stories in full-screen mode while you listen to one of 15 stations. There's the SportsCenter, too, serving up the latest news every 20 minutes, the PodCenter for accessing ESPN podcasts, and a nifty button for sending a text to the station you're streaming. Apple won't let apps run in the background, but ESPN Radio gets around that with a … Read more

NPR's news app and a game where you play as a spider: iPhone apps of the week

In my business, I deal with all kinds of software from different categories and platforms every day. There's a lot of great software out there for every platform (and certainly some bad ones, too), but once in a while you find something so unique it truly shines. I wouldn't say the app I'm talking about today is the best game I've ever played, but the design, music, and interface are not really found in any other game and are truly something to behold on the iPhone. Let's just say, I've played plenty of iPhone … Read more
