Dell drops its Streak 7 tablet

Dell has stopped selling the Streak 7 Android-based tablet.

When customers go to the tablet's page, they're presented with a message, saying that the "Streak 7 is no longer available online." The page now features information on other mobile devices Dell sells, including the Venue and Venue Pro. Dell is also still selling accessories for the Streak 7.

Dell's decision to stop selling the Streak 7 comes just a few months after the company announced that it had discontinued the 5-inch Streak 5 tablet.

That said, it's worth noting that Dell has not officially announced the death of its 7-inch tablet, so until it responds to CNET's request for information on the Streak 7's status, saying that it's discontinued might be too strong. Amazon, for instance, continues to sell the Streak 7.… Read more

Lenovo prepping 5-inch Android-based tablet, report says

Lenovo may be working on a 5-inch tablet, Engadget reports, citing an anonymous source.

According to the gadget news site, it has received some basic specs and photos of the device from its source. There's no telling what market the 5-inch tablet is designed for, but Lenovo is heavily focused on … Read more

Asus, Dell: We're not exiting the Android tablet business

Asus reiterated its commitment to the Android tablet business, refuting a report that said it, along with Acer and Dell, are looking to retreat after a rocky start.

The company was responding to Taiwanese news site Digitimes, which cited suppliers in its report that the three PC manufacturers were looking to phase out their Android tablet businesses.

"As usual, the rumors and reports from Digitimes are incorrect," said Asus spokesman Gary Key. "Asus is not exiting the Android tablet business."

Likewise, a Dell spokesman said the company doesn't have any plans to exit the business … Read more

The skinny on big-screen smartphones

If you're eyeing a Samsung Galaxy Note but worry whether its 5.3-inch display makes it "pocketable," we've got you covered.

We put five powerful smartphones--the Droid Razr (4.3-inch), the Galaxy Nexus (4.65-inch), the HTC Sensation XL (4.7-inch), the Dell Streak (5-inch), and the Samsung Galaxy Note--to a pocket test.

Unfortunately, our mobile phone reviewer Aloysius wears (relatively) baggy jeans, so if your wardrobe only consists of skinnies, this might not apply.

See if these phones are a comfortable fit for you, then let us know your ideal handset size in the comments below.

Dell Streak 5 gets stamp of approval from Department of Defense

The Dell Streak 5 has become the first Android-powered device to receive Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) certification.

Thanks to a host of applications designed to enhance the large phone's security, the Streak 5 will be used for the Defense Department's secure but unclassified communications. Military personnel will soon find that they have access to information from their desktops, as well as the ability to command and control programs much like they would in controlled environments.

The certification process began in September 2010 when Dell started working with the DISA in an effort to provide a secure, Android-based … Read more

Dell quietly discontinues Streak 5 tablet

Dell has officially discontinued its Streak 5 tablet.

The company has posted an image on its Streak 5 page, saying "goodbye" to the device. In its place, Dell directs users to its larger Streak 7, as well as accessories for those who already own its tiny tablet.

The Streak 5 launched last year. The device came with a 5-inch display, and allowed users to connect to the Web via Wi-Fi and 3G. At launch, the platform was criticized for its outdated Android 1.6 version, but Dell finally brought Android 2.2 (Froyo) to the platform with an … Read more

Dell Streak 10 Pro debuts in China

Dell has launched its first 10-inch tablet, according to Dow Jones Newswire and Engadget.

CNET reported exclusively in June that Dell would launch its 10-inch Android tablet in China first.

The tablet can also be purchased with a dock that has multiple USB ports, a USB host mode that allows PC-like emulation capabilities, HDMI video, the ability to run separate Citrix sessions on external monitors, and an Ethernet port, among other features.… Read more

Dell signals larger Android tablet troubles

This week, a Dell executive threw cold water on an already-lukewarm Android tablet market in the U.S., and his comments echo recent sniping by Nvidia's CEO about the launch of the Motorola Xoom.

Though Apple has sold 25 million iPads to date--many of those in the U.S.--Android tablet makers like Motorola and Samsung are selling a fraction of that. Motorola said it has shipped 250,000 Xoom tablets. Samsung has fared a bit better, with just under 1 million out the door in the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch.

Samsung's relatively robust number includes a … Read more

Exclusive: Dell spurns U.S. in launch of Android tablet in China

Dell will launch its highly anticipated 10-inch tablet in the Chinese market first, based on a emerging belief that the U.S. market isn't mature enough for a successful Android launch, Dell executives told CNET today.

Dell's Streak 10 Pro (see specifications below) will launch in China this summer and in the U.S. market probably sometime next year, John Thode, a Dell vice president and manager of Dell's mobility business, told CNET. The U.S. market simply doesn't offer a viable 10-inch tablet strategy for Dell, he said.

"This is not an either-or for … Read more

Nielsen: Tablets are hot, but few actually own one

Led by the iPad, the tablet market has taken off with a bang, but even with all the hoopla, less than 5 percent of U.S. consumers polled by Nielsen actually own one.

Tablets represent a huge potential money maker for the industry based on what consumers will pay not just for the device but all the content they need and want. Yet Nielsen's data, presented at the paidContent Mobile conference this week, shows that it's a market with considerable room to grow.

Adoption of tablets has risen over the past year to 4.8 percent in this … Read more
