Frozen pizza (and much more) in the woods

Getting back to nature doesn't have to mean getting away from it all.

You know how it is. When camping with family and/or friends, everybody finds themselves enjoying getting back to nature. It's not hard to do: the rustle of the wind through the trees, a nearby babbling brook, stars you can actually see. Then it hits. The need for a frozen pizza.

Modern convenience is never far away when camping with the Coleman Signature Outdoor Gear Portable Propane Stove/Oven. Capable of producing full meals just like the big oven back home, the propane-powered (it uses … Read more

WoodPellets.com stocks coffers for winter

When it comes to converting plants into usable energy, biofuels garner the bulk of attention and dollars. But there's a growing number of people using biomass for heating.

One company that's betting on continued growth is New Hampshire-based WoodPellets.com, which on Monday plans to disclose that it has raised $11 million to expand its online home wood pellet delivery service.

With the money, the 3-year-old e-commerce company plans to expand its distribution network to more places in the U.S. (right now, it works mainly in the Northeast) and to develop ways to do bulk shipments of … Read more

Stovetop coffee sans grounds

If you've read any of my blogs about coffee, you probably know that I'm in love with my French press coffeemaker. This isn't to say that I don't love all coffee, because I do, and will drink it regardless of where and how it was made. But my favorite cup of coffee comes from the French press, which gives it a rich and strong flavor that's hard to replicate in a drip coffee pot.

If you've ever used a French press before, you know that the downside of using them is that your cup … Read more

Stove-top nut roaster cranks out holiday treats

I have always been of the mind that the fastest way to ruin a good nut is to coat it in some sort of flavoring. Obviously--as evidenced by the massive selection of candied and spiced nuts on the market--I am in the minority. However, I am sure there are some chocolate lovers out there who feel the same way, albeit about chocolate. Luckily, there are plenty of nonchocolated nuts out there, while there also happen to be plenty of non-nutted chocolates. You see? We can all get along.

With the holiday spirit in mind, I took it upon myself to … Read more

Rotating fireplace turns up the heat

I know what you're thinking after looking at the feature picture for this blog post: "But it's not cold outside yet!" And in thinking so, you'd be right, but with September right around the corner, it'll be Fall in just a few short weeks. And when the colder weather rolls in, I'd like to be prepared.

For me, "prepared" means supplementing my wardrobe with extra sweaters. For you, it may mean an investment in a home-heating device, and if you're tired of the old-fashioned space heater, then a gadget like … Read more

Not your parents' camp stove

I stopped camping about the time I moved out from my parents' house, which had plenty of storage space. Few urban apartments have room for bulky camping gear--at least, mine haven't.

However, I began to rethink that old hobby when a friend sent me a link to the Coleman Exponent Rendezvous Stove. A far cry from my parents' chunky, metallic green camping stove, the Exponent Rendezvous is a minikitchen in highly portable form. Closed, it looks like a rugged, Bond-esque black-and-silver briefcase. When opened, the stove's lid folds out to reveal a hard-anodized basin with customizable storage bins, … Read more

Steam Quick removes baking messes

It seems as if every oven has some sort of caked-on mess--the buildup from spilled roasts and exploding baking attempts. The typical self-cleaning cycle doesn't do much to remove that gunk either. But who wants to stick their head in the oven and literally chip off that baked-on mess? I know I'm reluctant to go to such measures to clean an oven.

Samsung offers the FTQ386LWX range--say that 10 times fast!--with its Steam Quick feature. Rather than forcing you to break out the elbow grease, ovens with Steam Quick run a light cleaning cycle, meant to … Read more

A little candy-apple color with my kitchen, please

When I read that Viking expanded its appliance color palate from 14 to 24 colors, I wanted to take a joyous ode-to-the-candy-apple-red leap.

This news provides a measure of relief to my growing ennui toward stainless steel.

I know, I know, stainless steel is a kitchen fashion statement that an increasing number of people are willing to shell out the extra $200 per appliance to have. It blends well, cleans up nicely (sometimes), looks sophisticated, and is supposed to last a long time.

Arguably--and believe me people do argue endlessly about the merits of stainless steel--it has got a lot … Read more

Next big thing: Self-cleaning trash cans?

So it's not just us after all. For the record, we allergy sufferers aren't the only ones who are fixated on cleaning technologies. Gizmag says a recent survey claims that 60 percent of respondents would buy a self-cleaning garbage can and 59 percent want a stove top that can do the same. Oh, and while they're at it, 47 percent wouldn't mind a dryer that also folded laundry.

We wish the research stopped there. Gizmag goes on to include some other frightening hygiene-related statistics that are enough to make our thrice-shampooed hair stand on end: "… Read more
