Man finds car stolen 42 years ago on eBay

Somebody call the Hollywood producers, we've got a feel-good blockbuster on our hands. Here's the pitch -- man loses his love, never gives up hope, and finds her online 42 years later. Yes, it's a true story, and yes, I think Tom Hanks would be perfect for the lead. I'll have my people Skype your people.

There is one wrinkle in this real-life plot line, though -- the lost love is a 1967 Austin Healey 3000. According to the Associated Press, the slick British car was stolen from Bob Russell's apartment near Philadelphia after he … Read more

AT&T to launch service to report and block stolen phones

AT&T plans to launch a service that will allow customers to report and block stolen mobile devices.

The service was initially reported by the Verge earlier today.

The service would let a customer block data, voice, and text message access to the phone or tablet but keep their account information in place, avoiding the hassle of creating a new account and SIM card.

It's part of a broader effort the national carriers agreed to in cooperation with the Federal Communications Commission. In April, the carriers agreed to work together to compile and manage a database of stolen … Read more

Google Image Search jewels rendered in pixelated leather

I'm not the kind of person to drop a wad of money on jewelry, but there are buyers out there that will shell out millions for a necklace with a rare stone or earrings set with massive diamonds.

You can start saving your change, or you can check out the Stolen Jewels collection from design studio Mike & Maaike.

Mike & Maaike hitched a ride on Google Image Search, looked up the world's most expensive and famous jewelry, and started downloading. Those low-res images were then pixelated and reproduced for the real world in interwoven strips of leather.… Read more

Photobucket app helps nab alleged phone thief

For some humans in the world, it seems that stealing someone else's phone is on their bucket list.

For one alleged thief, taking someone else's phone put him on that person's Photobucket list. Which led to him being arrested.

The way PC World tells it, 26-year-old Korey Heess, from Salinas, Calif., has a goatee, an earring, and an alleged penchant for taking pictures of himself.

Having allegedly stolen a woman's phone, the suspect snapped himself in full repose. Interestingly (but not for him, perhaps), the owner had equipped her phone with a Photobucket app that automatically … Read more

A MacBook theft story with a happy ending

What would you do if your MacBook was stolen? Joshua Kaufman of Oakland, Calif., started a Tumblr blog about it after his MacBook was swiped back in March. He says, via the site This Guy Has My Macbook:

On March 21, 2011, my MacBook was stolen from my apartment in Oakland, CA. I reported the crime to the police and even told them where it was, but they couldn't help me due to lack of resources. Meanwhile, I'm using the awesome app, Hidden, to capture these photos of this guy who has my MacBook.

Kaufman posted photos the stolen laptop was able to snap remotely, showing the alleged thief using the MacBook in bed, in a car, and at other locations. The blog became a viral Internet hit, and thanks to the media attention it generated, local police were prompted to take action after Kaufman had gathered enough information about the suspect. … Read more

MacBook owner puts alleged thief's dancing on YouTube

Sometimes, when you lose something, you can gain something too. Sometimes, when you feel someone has wronged you, there might be an avenue down which you can discover a little solace--or even a touch of revenge.

This seems to be the case with Mark Bao and his stolen MacBook Air.

Bao, you see, might have not done well in leaving his laptop in a lounge at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., allowing an opportunist to swipe it earlier this year. However, he had already embedded a little wisdom inside of his machine by installing BackBlaze software.

This, the way CBS News.com tells it, allowed him to enter his laptop remotely and see what might be going on there. Or, indeed, going down.

And what a picture of humanity in the Facebook age was revealed.

The first thing the alleged thief reportedly did was photograph himself. Then he filmed himself dancing to Tyga's "Make It Rain." Bao, naturally, was impressed by the software's performance rather more than he was by the alleged thief's.… Read more
