The best robot vs. Rory McIroy golf contest you will ever see

When a man called Jeff asks you to join him for a game of golf, you might agree.

However, when a robot called Jeff wants to accompany you to your local links, you'd better be prepared for losing a couple of links in the chain to your perfect swing and your mental equilibrium.

For Jeff the robot is a trash-talking, joyously mean-spirited golfing robot with a very well-honed swing.… Read more

Top NBA draft pick turns up wearing Google Glass

Thursday saw an annual ritual that dedicated sports lovers cherish beyond most.

Yes, a bunch of tipsy New Yorkers mercilessly booed NBA commissioner David Stern while he tried to pretend to know the names of draft picks.

This year's draft was an especially dreary affair.

In times gone by, you could rely on my comely Golden State Warriors to draft high and pick someone whose name had never been heard then and hasn't been heard since.

This year, even committed sports fans would have been daunted to remember the name of a single player.

Perhaps that's why … Read more

A-Rod and Twitter: A marriage made for divorce?

There are few athletes more likable than Alex Rodriguez.

That natural charm, coupled with 100 percent natural talent, makes adults and little children want to rush to his side and clutch the hem of his pants.

Oh, of course I've had an excess of humor injections in my gluteus maximus.

Still, one gets the feeling that A-Rod would like to come toward the people and show more of his beatific side.

So he recently joined Twitter, with markedly disastrous results.

It took just nine tweets before his own general manager, Brian Cashman, told him to shut the hell up.… Read more

Super-sick crushworthy cars: Measuring horsepower in millions

When Britain's Salon Prive luxury car fair opens in September, visitors will get a chance to gawk at the Vencer Sarthe, a new hand-built supercar from the Netherlands. We're already planning to sneak in.

The Sarthe is one of many ridiculously crushworthy cars we wish we could afford, along with our recent fantasizing about $8 million gold speakers, luxury timepieces, and diamond-encrusted tablets and smartphones.

The Sarthe was named after the Circuit de la Sarthe course, a famed venue of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It has a 510-horsepower, 8-cylinder engine; six-speed manual gearbox; and a top speed of 202 mph. It can do 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. … Read more

NBA star turns to Twitter to sells his bulldog

There's a certain imaginative depth in the relationship between the wealthy and the Web.

Zach Braff, David Fincher, and Kristen Bell are merely three of the star-kissed who have learned how to take back and tried to get money from their fans on Kickstarter.

Kendrick Perkins, meanwhile, also decided that the personal touch might help him out of a tiny bind.

The center for the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder wanted to sell his bulldog. But not for him stooping to eBay or Craigslist. Those would be a long, long distance for Perkins to stoop.

Instead, as the terriers of Deadspin report, … Read more

NBA 2K14 shuns Wii U, opts for next-gen consoles instead

NBA 2K14 has no love for Nintendo and the Wii U.

2K Sports, the Take-Two Interactive-owned studio responsible for the hit NBA 2K franchise, said on Thursday that its latest basketball game would launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 1. However, there will be no version for Nintendo's Wii U this year.

Instead, a "distinct and dynamic" experience would come for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, said Jason Argent, senior vice president of sports operations for 2K Sports. He confirmed that NBA 2K14 would be a launch title for both systems.

Well, I don't know what to say about the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that hasn't already been said. So I chose to seek out the essence of the car and tell some of its less-told stories. I hope you find it at least something of a departure from the usual … Read more

Here's what we know about Xbox One games

The wait is over. Microsoft's new console is called the Xbox One, and it will be a machine that will wear many hats. But what did we learn about the games?

First off, Microsoft tells CNET that the Xbox One will not be backward compatible with any previous Xbox game. Xbox One games will also need to be fully installed, and if the install disc is used on another console, there will be a small fee for doing so. We don't have a lot of the details beyond that, but fears of anti-used-game tactics have officially been realized. … Read more
