Outbox delivers your snail mail to your iPhone or iPad

Mail service as we know it just doesn't work anymore. Too much junk. Too much hassle sorting, scanning, and/or filing the stuff we need to keep. And, let's be honest, so much of what arrives in our mailboxes could -- some would say should -- arrive electronically.

Austin-based startup Outbox wants to make that happen by digitizing all of your physical mail and delivering it to you electronically on your iPhone or iPad, or your PC.

Interesting proposition, wouldn't you say? Think about it: no more daily trek to the mailbox followed by the daily armload … Read more

Send snail mail postcards easily using your iPhone

Postcardly Postcards is a neat service that allows you to create a postcard using your own photos, then have it sent via snail mail to a recipient for a reasonable price. The process is almost perfect and I really like the idea, but some small tweaks would make the app even better.

Creating a postcard is dead simple. You start by snapping a photo or choosing one from your iPhone's photo library. Then, you can move and scale the photo to make it fit on the postcard the way you want (more on this later). When you're satisfied … Read more

Sound system or mechanical mollusk?

If we didn't know what these were, we might have thought they were the latest of WowWee's creepy creations. They look like some kind of one-eyed robotic mollusks.

But the "Mobius MKII" are high-end loudspeakers (defined by a projected price range of $10,000 to $15,000) that are as imposing in size and features as they are in cost. Standing well over 3 feet tall, each speaker has four drivers housed in an 8-inch "bipolar array" perched on top like a spherical beacon, according to Audio Junkies.

They're expected to be released … Read more

Solar light works like snail's eyes

Being of the green ilk here at Crave, we fully support the notion of solar lighting (especially if it keeps out co-workers from exhibiting any violent tendencies). We're even willing to tolerate models born of questionable taste. But we must draw the line at gadgets that resemble killer mollusks.

The "Place-Anywhere Articulated Solar Light" may sound innocuous enough, but don't be fooled. By its own admission, this product bears "two independent telescoping stalks, similar to a snail's ommatophores." That would be snail eyes, as every schoolboy knows. Whatever they're called, they can … Read more

Meet Buster, the latest in cat-scaring household gadgets

I'm not a parent, so maybe I don't see the hidden appeal in this prototype known as "Buster," the kiddie ride-on snail who also vacuums the floor, as seen on Babygadget. Isn't this just asking for horrific cat-chasing incidents? A two-year-old on top of a vacuum is like a Roomba with a brain.

On the other hand, I totally think they should make a lawn mower version for grown-ups. If I had, you know, several acres to mow, I'd be psyched to do it if I got to ride on top of a big … Read more
