Barnes & Noble Q1 loss narrows to $40M as Nook sales decline

Barnes & Noble narrowed its fiscal first-quarter loss, but suffered through a few hiccups with its Nook e-reader business.

The book retailer posted a loss of $40.9 million, or 78 cents a share, compared with a loss of $56.6 million, or 99 cents a share, from a year ago. Revenue rose only slightly to $1.45 billion from $1.42 billion a year ago.

Analysts, on average, estimated that the company would post a loss of 98 cents on revenue of $1.48 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Greenstart unveils latest clean-tech startups

At a ceremony attended by San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, Greenstart showcased its first four investments in green tech.

Nokia 2705 Shade comes to Verizon Wireless

The Nokia 2705 Shade is a new compact flip phone for Verizon Wireless. Surprisingly, you can buy the Shade with or without a camera, and you also have the choice of various Xpress-on changeable covers, which are sold separately.

Features include a 1,000-entry phone book, text and multimedia messaging, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth. The Shade will be available starting October 6 as an online exclusive for $29.99 with a new two-year commitment. The Xpress-on covers are available in blue, red, and purple for $19.99 at Verizon Wireless' online store as well.

Military wants bulletproof, dimmable windows to protect VIPs

The U.S. Department of Defense has contracted for the development of bullet resistant windows that dim instantly with a touch of a button, providing "on-demand" light control, privacy, and protection from heat, glare, and ultraviolet rays.

GKN Aerospace was awarded the $425,000 contract by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office's VIP Protection Subgroup to incorporate dimmable films with armored glass to provide a "SmartShade" that conceals the location and identity of VIPs traveling in armored vehicles.
