With 'Unchained Reaction,' the MythBusters go Rube Goldberg

For years, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman were known for one thing: being the "MythBusters."

But now, the two have launched a new show, Discovery Channel's "Unchained Reaction," "a new six-part series that pits two teams of varying backgrounds against each other to build an elaborate chain-reaction contraption."

Think giant Rube Goldberg machines--balls falling and knocking things into other things. Seesaws going up and throwing things into the air, each step in the process impacting the next, with each team vying to build the most impressive contraption in five tension-packed days. The … Read more

MythBusters to launch explosive new series, 'Unchained Reaction'

The MythBusters are at it again.

In a tweet this morning, Adam Savage, co-host of the hit Discovery Channel show, said that he and his co-conspirator, Jamie Hyneman, have gotten the green light to produce their new "sooper secret project," "Unchained Reaction."

According to Deadline Hollywood, Savage and Hyneman will executive produce the new Discovery Channel show and serve as judges on what will be a six-part series. The show will pit "two teams of varying backgrounds--artists, rocket scientists, animatronic specialists, engineers, and even your average Joes--against each other to build an elaborate chain reaction … Read more

'Don't try this at home:' MythBusters take their act on tour

CUPERTINO, Calif.--As Adam Savage walked onto the stage alongside a battered old water heater, the crowd of several thousand people erupted in a loud ovation. They weren't cheering for the famous co-host of "MythBusters."

"Only at a MythBusters show will a busted water heater get a round of applause," Savage said, grinning.

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you know why the audience was revved up by the appearance of something as prosaic as a water heater. But for the uninitiated, during a 2007 episode of Discovery Channel's hit … Read more

Hifiman HE-300: A new high for mid-price headphones?

The market for quality headphones is still growing by leaps and bounds, so there are lots of new brands getting into the game.

When Hifiman introduced the HE-5 headphone in 2009, I was so impressed I compared it with $1,000+ models from Audio Technica, Denon, Grado, Sennheiser, and Ultrasone, and the upstart company's headphone model more than held its own.

More recently I looked at the Hifiman HE-500 headphones ($699), and compared them with one of the best headphones in the world, the Audeze LCD-2 ($945). That one's low bass felt more solid and had superior impact, but the HE-500's midrange and treble were more detailed and present.

The HE-300 ($249) shares the HE-500's styling, but uses more conventional driver technology. It's lighter in weight (270 grams), has a leather headband and soft velvet earpads, and comes with a user-replaceable 9-foot-long cable terminated with a 3.5mm plug (and there's a 6.3mm adaptor). The long cable is bulky and a little stiff, but since it's user-replaceable, HE-300 owners may find shorter, more flexible alternatives. The headphone comes with a sturdy padded storage case. Comfort over long listening sessions was good, but not up to full-size Sennheiser headphone standards. That company has a real knack for making comfy headphones. … Read more

MythBusters make apologetic house call after cannon accident

It's not often that two world-famous TV stars drop by your house, but then again, it's not often that cannonballs come flying through your walls either.

On Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, MythBusters hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman personally stopped by to apologize to the residents of the Dublin, Calif., house that crew members of their show had accidentally hit with their cannon fire a day earlier.

In a tweet this afternoon, Savage addressed the situation. "It's true, a cannonball got away from a Mythbusters experiment in Dublin, CA," Savage tweeted first. &… Read more

The MythBusters' long history of accidents and mishaps

Cannonballs into people's houses. Blown-out windows. Electric shocks. Goat-kicks to the groin. Welcome to the "MythBusters."

If you think the now-famous MythBusters cannonball mishap is the only example of things going wrong at the hit TV show, you haven't been paying attention.

It turns out there's no shortage of examples of accidents, injuries, and even damaging explosions resulting from the show's countless attempts to bust myths (See videos at the end of this blog post). As co-host Adam Savage once put it, "MythBusters" is "four minutes of science, and 10 minutes … Read more

Are men or women better packers? The MythBusters know

SAN FRANCISCO--It's an age-old question. Who's the better driver, navigator, or packer--men or women? These are some of the least settled unknowns in the battle of the sexes, but ones perfect for the MythBusters.

With an episode that will air next year but which was taped over the last few weeks on Treasure Island, halfway between San Francisco and Oakland, the mega-hit Discovery Channel show is braving the potential wrath of millions of members of the losing gender by trying to find out the answers.

Usually, the MythBusters conduct their experiments by themselves, either in warehouses in San … Read more

Roz Savage makes history in solo Indian Ocean row

After five months at sea, British adventurer and environmental advocate Roz Savage made landfall this morning in Mauritius, completing her solo row across the Indian Ocean and becoming the first woman to row solo across the "big three": the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian.

Savage, 43, set off from Australia five months ago in her 23-foot rowboat. After rowing more than 4,000 miles, she arrived in Grand Baie, Mauritius, today.

In total, she has rowed about 15,000 miles and spent more than 500 days at sea. She completed the Atlantic row in 2005, and then went on … Read more
