Is the Canon PowerShot S95 a worthy update to the S90?

Over the past year I've had several readers tell me various reasons they didn't buy Canon's enthusiast compact, the PowerShot S90. Everything from no HD movie capture and the lack of an optical viewfinder to no righthand grip and not enough zoom range. (I agree with the first two, no so much the latter two.) Well, the S95 was announced Thursday, and though there are a couple worthwhile "improvements," it looks like S90 owners might want to stick with what they've got.

The S95 uses the same larger-than-usual 1/1.7-inch type high-sensitivity CCD … Read more

Sexiest Volvo that never was (concept car Friday)

If you ever though that a Volvo couldn't be sexy, prepare to be surprised. Nouphone J. Bansasine designed this slick 2015 Volvo S90 concept during his internship at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center--birthplace of the XC90, S80, S60, and the Safety Concept Car that would become the current Volvo C30--and it's probably the sweetest looking Volvo that we've ever seen.

The S90 has the four-door coupe profile that is so very popular with automakers these days, but it has what appear to be rear suicide doors, a la Mazda RX-8 or Mini Clubman. At the … Read more

Canon S90 reborn as an Elph: The SD4000 IS

Canon's PowerShot S90 continues to be one of the most popular cameras on CNET, but it is expensive and really targeted at a prosumer user. The SD4000 IS announced Tuesday brings some of the S90's features--primarily its f2.0 lens--to the masses in a body design intended to be stylish or, in other words, less serious-looking than the S90.

The camera is also the company's first to feature a high-speed backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, though it's still the typical compact camera-size sensor, 1/2.3-inch type. This sensor means Canon is finally able to offer features that … Read more

PowerShot proliferation in pictures

Yes, there was great disappointment that no new digital SLRs were announced by Canon on Wednesday--only PowerShots. However, I was not one of the disappointed as I love point-and-shoot cameras of all shapes, sizes, and capabilities. And Canon delivered exactly that.

Though the SX20 IS and SX120 IS are only minor upgrades to their predecessors, the G11, SD980 IS, and SD940 IS all have major tweaks separating them from their previous iterations.

What was probably supposed to be the big "oh wow" camera, however, was the reintroduction of the PowerShot S series in the form of the S90. Based off of the high-end functionality of the PowerShot G-series cameras, it has several cool features including a 28mm-equivalent wide-angle f/2.0 lens with a 3.8x optical zoom, a customizable control ring around the lens for easy access and operation of manual or other shooting settings, and RAW+JPEG capture--all in a body that can fit right in your pocket.

Read more about the cameras and check out some hands-on photos in the slide shows below.

Lastly, in case you're more into camcorders than cameras, Canon announced one new HD model, the HF S11.
