Second act for the unorthodox Steve Case

When F. Scott Fitzgerald claimed that "there are no second acts in American life," he clearly didn't foresee the resilient career of the man who once headed America Online. Rita Braver reports:

He was the Boy Wonder of computing, co-founding the pioneering Internet service America Online while still in his twenties, and then helping make it the top-earning stock of the 1990s -- trying, he told CBS News back in 1997, "to build an interactive medium to inspire people's lives."

And if you've ever wondered what happened to Steve Case, look no further. … Read more

Ron Paul getting his own video game

Presidential hopeful Ron Paul will soon put the smackdown on the Federal Reserve -- in a video game, that is.

The Road to REVOLution is a "side-scrolling platformer action/adventure game, reminiscent of console classics like Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog," video game developer Daniel Williams explained.

The goal of the game is for Paul to become president of the United States and shut down the Federal Reserve. In the game, you play as Paul, who has to hop through all 50 states to collect gold and delegates.… Read more

Verizon ready to discontinue Droid 3, 4G hot spots, and more

Barely six months after making its debut, the Droid 3 may be packing its bags and heading off into the sunset.

According to information obtained by The Verge, Verizon Wireless is poised to discontinue a number of devices, including the Motorola Droid 3, LG Revolution, and various Mi-Fi Hotspots. Their source advises that the final shipments are expected to arrive later this month.

Although both the Revolution and Droid 3 are relatively newer smartphones, the specifications pale in comparison to other Android handsets. Considering that successors to both models are rumored to debut in the near term, it makes sense … Read more

Details surfacing for successor to LG Revolution

If you thought Verizon Wireless was going to slow down on the high-end Android smartphones, you'd be wrong.

Based on recently leaked information, soon we should see an LG phone with 4G LTE connectivity and an HD display. Expected to be called the LG Spectrum, the smartphone should be the heir apparent to the Revolution which launched in mid-2011.

Rumored hardware details for the LG Spectrum match up quite nicely with the recently announced Optimus LTE and Nitro HD (AT&T). Specifications include a 1,280x720-pixel HD display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera and support for 4G … Read more

Start-up Unthink: We're the 'anti-Facebook'

Unthink says it will trigger a social revolution.

On its home page, Unthink uses black-and-white photos of the Civil Rights Movement as a backdrop, and it promises to "emancipate social media" and "unleash people's extraordinary potential." Apparently, that's done by giving users an online hub that is free of "privacy issues," "endless redesigns," and user profiles vamping as "commercial junkyards," as well as allowing users to own their data and all their interactions on the site.

It's not hard to identify which social network Unthink, based in … Read more

Boogie to Tetris on a Dance Dance Revolution mat

Everyone remembers Tetris. Students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have brought new life to the classic game game by attaching a pair of 6-foot colored LED arrays to Dance Dance Revolution mats.

The life-size game is displayed on the LED arrays instead of a television set. To rotate or change the position of the brick, you'll have to step on the preassigned pads on the DDR mats. Of course, instead of dancing, you'll just be hopping around trying to control your brick, making you look rather silly.

Watch the video to see the whole concept in action:

The students have also provided instructions here, so anyone with the right coding knowledge and equipment can build a setup like this too.

The carrier unveiled four new devices: the HTC ThunderBolt, the Samsung Droid Charge, the LG Revolution, and the Motorola Droid Bionic. All four promise fast 4G speeds, and indeed, they deliver. However, they aren't all the same. Here's our roundup of all four Verizon 4G handsets. … Read more

[Updated] Did OnLive coupon dustup earn gamer good will?

Update: Joystiq reports that GameStop is now offering a $50 store credit and a two-for-one used game offer for customers affected by the Deus Ex: Human Revolution coupon controversy.

Before this week, if you mentioned OnLive's cloud-gaming service to dedicated gamers, you'd hear lots of skepticism. Whether it's doubts about OnLive's responsiveness or reservations about the absence of a local copy of games that have been paid for, OnLive has met with plenty of consumer resistance (although we like it) since it emerged in 2009.

This past week, though, OnLive seems to have earned itself some good will. At the start of the week, gamers discovered a coupon for a free OnLive version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in their boxed copies of the game's PC version. Putting the service, and a copy of a well-received fan favorite game, in the hands of gamers who risk nothing by giving OnLive a spin can only help win fans.

Then, a few days into the week, news broke that retailer GameStop was pulling the OnLive coupon from its Deus Ex copies on the grounds that OnLive is a competitor to GameStop's own forthcoming streaming service, due to hit beta later this year. That move, of course, met with outrage from the gaming community.… Read more

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: More human than human

Eleven years since its original inception, the Deus Ex series welcomes a new entry in the form of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. In a world where human augmentations have been commercialized by big business, human beings have the option to upgrade not just their bodies but also their minds. Such an ethical hot topic has created passionate factions on each side of the argument forcing players to find a balance between the two.

A franchise known for mixing RPG and action elements all while giving the player the freedom of choice, we've been anxiously awaiting to see just how such an ambitious collection of mechanics play out on current-generation consoles. Taking a special look at the game on PC is CNET Senior Editor Rich Brown.

Jeff: After just surviving a summer drought of games like the one we just experienced, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a very welcome light at the end of the tunnel. It's an incredibly deep and layered game with a cerebral storyline that will charm even the most jaded cyberpunk enthusiast--a true complement to the game's great Blade Runner-inspired art direction.

The best way I can describe Human Revolution is a cross between Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect. The team at Eidos Montreal borrowed the best elements from each of these franchises and made it their own, successfully weaving a game that lives up to its series' legacy of giving the player ultimate choice. This concept applies to almost everything Adam Jensen--the game's main character--does, from interrogating a person of interest to infiltrating a testing laboratory.… Read more

Quick shift for open windows

The spread of wide-screen monitors has prompted renewed interest in programs that manage open windows on the desktop. WinSplit Revolution is just such a program. It's freeware that lets users quickly snap windows into a variety of sizes and positions using hot keys or a tiny number-pad-like "virtual numpad." While it's great for wide-screen LCDs, it works on any monitor.

WinSplit Revolution's installer let us choose regular or portable installation options. We chose the regular option, which lets you run the program at startup. The portable version can be installed on a USB drive and … Read more
