Review: Apple iTunes for Mac revamps its interface and improves performance

Apple iTunes for Mac continues doing its thing, managing and playing your media, constructing playlists, selling music, and renting movies; but the interface is always evolving.

We updated Apple iTunes for Mac via Apple's Software Update, upgrading 10.7 to 11.0.4 without any issues. A dramatically redesigned interface was apparent right off the bat. The sidebar was gone--it can be restored--and all our albums were displayed in a grid of album covers. We scrolled through our 2,231 albums, smoothly and precisely, but iTunes 10 could not handle a library of this size very well, making browsing … Read more

Review: Comb legal documents with expert help from Legal Document Analysis

Legal Document Analysis takes almost all of the leg work out of reviewing and combing legal documents for the information you need. While certainly a powerful review program, it isn't very friendly to non-experts.

Since this program comes as an executable file, it will probably make your antivirus suspicious. During testing, it set off Windows' built-in firewall, as well. It doesn't seem like the program needs to access any of the features that would make the firewall go on the defensive. It's just a basic Web applet that lets you upload a file and then set predetermined … Read more

Record silent Instagram videos

I love animated GIFs. They're quick, there's an art to them, and as obnoxious as they might be visually -- they're silent.

My big problem with this whole Vine and Instagram video boom is that the end product is often unintentionally noisy -- sometimes even jarring. I used to browse my Instagram feed like I was walking through an endless art gallery made by my friends. But now it seems like every few posts there's a video sucking down my bandwidth and assaulting my ears with a cut-up of ambient noise.

Close your eyes and your … Read more

Review: Call Recorder for Skype offers options and tools for archiving video calls

Call Recorder for Skype for Mac seamlessly integrates into your existing installation of Skype, providing a number of configuration options for recording calls as well as bundled tools to work with the resulting audio and video. If you're not familiar with various media encoding formats, the configuration screen may provide some challenges, though default selections are enough to get you started.

Installation, a matter of a few mouse clicks, was quick and painless. Skype launched automatically when it finished, and we were brought right to the application's configuration screen, which integrated itself directly into Skype's Preferences panel. … Read more

Will the single kill the album?

Is an album a more substantial work of art than a single? Or is a well-crafted single all we need? There were always singles, but in the days before the Internet, fans were sometimes "forced" to buy albums to get the music they wanted, even when most of the album's tunes weren't great. The hugely entertaining "The Great Debate: Singles vs. Albums" held last Monday at the New Music Seminar in NYC covered the issue in depth.

Robert Christgau, one of the first generations of professional "rock critics," was there to defend … Read more

Review: Audio Memos Free provides a clean interface and basic recording tools

Audio Memos Free is a fairly basic voice recorder without a lot of frills or added features, but with a solid, smooth performance that will work well for most casual users. Power users might want more, but the voice recording and editing functions here are all well-built and make for a solid, well-rounded, free app that outperforms many other free voice recorders, including the built-in tool that comes on all iPhones.

When you first open the app you can immediately start recording. You can change quite a few settings, as well, including the amplification, normalization, name, and quality of the … Read more

Could the world's best turntables come from New Jersey?

VPI has been making turntables in New Jersey since the early 1980s when Ronald Reagan was president, and everyone thought the CD would kill the LP in a few years. Well, VPI is still there and is currently experiencing a sales boom.

Harry Weisfeld has been at the helm since Day One, but he's about to step down and let his son Matt run the company. Harry will continue to design turntables and tonearms. He makes prototypes, listens to his handiwork, and then goes back and tweaks the design. I spotted lots of failed designs all over the factory, … Read more
