RealNetworks cuts 80 jobs, with another 80 on the block

RealNetworks revealed today that it plans to cut 80 jobs, or about 7 percent of its workforce in an effort to reduce operating expenses.

Another 80 people will be laid off during the next seven months, though the company said it hoped to redeploy many of them when their current assignments end. RealNetworks expects to record a charge of between $2 million and $2.5 million related to the layoffs in the current quarter.

Rob Glaser, who returned to the helm of the online media company in July, said in a companywide e-mail that the layoffs were the first step … Read more

RealPlayer for Android leaves beta, hits Google Play

Previously available only in its beta form, RealNetworks' RealPlayer for Android today makes the jump to its full version. The free app offers an all-in-one interface for playing music, watching videos, and viewing photos.

The video viewer is pretty standard with its basic playback controls. Meanwhile, the photo viewer steps it up a notch with a slideshow option and even an integrated music player, so you can set a musical soundtrack to your photos. And finally, there's the music player, which takes up the bulk of RealPlayer's interface. It offers playlists, search, and browsing by artist, album, song … Read more

He's back--Rob Glaser returns as RealNetworks' (interim) CEO

What would be the runupto the 4th of July without a last-minute tech personnel shuffle? This time around it's musical chairs over at RealNetworks, where company founder Rob Glaser is back as interim chief executive after the company announced the resignation of Thomas Nielsen from the top spot.

RealNetworks remained mum about the reasons behind Nielsen's departure. The former Adobe exec came on board as CEO just eight months ago. This job is turning into the proverbial hot seat; Nielsen's predecessor, Bob Kimball, resigned after one year. Glaser himself resigned as CEO in January 2010.

Intel pays $120M for RealNetworks video patents, software

Intel is buying video patents and software from RealNetworks for $120 million, giving the chipmaker new muscle in a market that's increasingly important but filled with intellectual-property obstacles.

RealNetworks is selling about 190 patents, 170 patent applications, and its next-generation video encoding technology in the deal, the companies announced today.

Intel called some of the patents "foundational," indicating its belief that some are important to the ever-hotter area of digital video. Codecs such as H.264 or Google's VP8 are used to encode and decode video, a task that's crucial in videoconferencing, gaming, and entertainment. … Read more

MPAA sets sights on Zediva founder

The major film studios have forced Zediva to shut its doors, but the case is far from closed.

A federal court yesterday officially issued a preliminary injunction against Zediva, a start-up video-rental service that made a name for itself last year by employing a legally iffy business model. Earlier this month, a U.S. District judge announced his intention to issue a preliminary injunction but waited for some legal housekeeping chores to be completed before making it official.

Last week, Zediva suspended operations, and now the case moves to the next and very important stage of determining whether the company … Read more

RealDownloader really downloads in just one click

If you're an avid downloader of online videos (legal content, to which you have the rights, of course), you might want to tune into RealNetworks' latest offering. The just released RealDownloader is perhaps the quickest and simplest online video downloader for Windows that we've seen. Unlike many of its competitors, when RealDownloader says one-click, it seriously means just one click.

When you install RealDownloader, it mingles with your browsers and automatically detects when you navigate to a Website containing embedded videos. This means you don't have to open up the program to use it, resulting in fewer … Read more

Sprint delivers music tracks, ringtones with new Android app

Sprint is getting into the music distribution game today with the launch of its Sprint Music Plus service.

Partnering with RealNetworks, the free Android application lets users manage their existing music library, as well as purchase new music and ringtones. Individual tracks range from 69 cents to $1.29 each, and you can also purchase full albums and ringback tones and ringtones.

In an effort to attract more spending, Sprint will offer bundles of songs with their respective tones should a subscriber opt to pick up all three at once. Any purchases made will be automatically deferred to the monthly service bill where customers will see itemized charges.

I've spent a few hours with the Music Plus application today and find it to be only average as a media player. Compared with the HTC music player that comes with the Evo 4G, it looks partially finished and lacking. What I do like, however, is the ability to create custom ringback tones for my contacts based on individuals, groups, and special occasions. It was very easy to set up a special ringback for select friends, so that they hear a specific song at certain times of the day.

As handy as it is for users to buy tracks and ringtones, I cannot help but feel bad for novice Android users. Paying $2.50 for a ringtone seems silly when Sprint will sell the full song for $1.29 at the most. There are also other applications in the Android Market that allow for cropping tracks into bite-size tones.

However, as an all-in-one app, it's hard to complain much when things are free. Sprint customers can find Music Plus as a free download in the Sprint Zone application today. … Read more

"I took on this role to lead a restructuring and transformation of RealNetworks into a more lean, efficient, and effective business and we have completed that phase of RealNetworks' transformation. Jobs ordered to testify in FairPlay antitrust case

Apple CEO Steve Jobs was ordered by a judge yesterday to answer questions in a deposition related to an antitrust suit filed against the company in 2005 over its FairPlay DRM software.

Attorneys for Apple had argued that Jobs' testimony in this case would be repetitive of what has already been offered as part of the ongoing lawsuit. But presiding over the case known as the Apple iPod iTunes Antitrust Litigation, U.S. Magistrate Judge Howard Lloyd ruled yesterday that this alone was not sufficient to preclude Jobs from testifying.

The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for … Read more
