Quad-core phones will be big, but not everywhere

Earlier this week, I looked at some of the technical considerations of creating a quad-core smartphone. Although I was able to delve into seven myths about quad-core phones, there's still the business side to consider.

Make no mistake, processors are big business. Every phone needs one, and there are now even more players competing to supply them. In 2010, chipmakers earned $2.385 billion in global sales of mobile phone application and multimedia processors, according to Gartner analyst Mark Hung. Of that figure, smartphones drove $1.416 billion in revenue.… Read more

Editors' note: This article originally posted on April 8, 2012, and was updated on December 19, 2012.

Open up your wallet today and there are no fewer than five smartphones you can buy running on quad-core processors. Seven months ago, there was one, the HTC One X, and only if you bought the international version, which lacked the 4G LTE speeds coveted by U.S. phone-buyers.

After CES next month, expect the number of announced quad-core devices to double as the core war continues to heat up.

By summer, you may turn up your nose at perfectly fast devices running … Read more

Pair of unknown LG Androids found ahead of Mobile World Congress

A pair of unannounced LG smartphones are appearing online just four weeks before Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The preliminary details were found in the UPnP Forum (1) (2), a popular spot for spying new devices before they come to market. Aside from the respective model numbers, there's not a ton of information to glean from the actual findings. PocketNow, however, has unearthed additional details.

After piecing together user agent profiles and model numbers, the LG-P700 will run Ice Cream Sandwich and feature a 640x480-pixel display. As that resolution does not fit the typical dimensions for Android handsets, … Read more

Quad-core chip makes sense for Apple laptop

If the speculation about a new MacBook Pro is on the money, the step up to Intel's quad-core mobile technology would have a profound impact on this vaunted line of Apple laptops.

So, why would Apple adopt a Core i processor in a laptop? The short answer is OS X Snow Leopard. The new operating system is designed to be better at wringing more performance out of multicore processors--and the Core i chips pack four cores.

The long answer is the Core "i" chips themselves. The Core i, a.k.a. "Nehalem," is a brand … Read more

AMD eyes Intel, Windows 7 with $99 chip

Advanced Micro Devices will try to inject new life into the lackluster desktop PC market with the first sub-$100 quad-core processor aimed at Windows 7--and Intel.

It's all about mobile computing today. But AMD's Athlon II X4 quad-core processor will give consumers something to consider on the desktop when Windows 7 ships in October. The chip is priced at $99 for "system builders," according to AMD.

"The introduction of the new AMD mainstream desktop platform coupled with Windows 7, allows...a faster, higher performing experience at an attractive price point," said Mike Ybarra, … Read more

Get a quad-core Gateway desktop for $290

I try not to go to the Woot well very often--it's a competing deal-of-the-day site, after all--but this is too good to pass up: a refurbished Gateway quad-core desktop system for $289.99. Shipping runs a mere $5.

Because it's Woot, the offer expires at the end of the day, and stands a good chance of selling out before then.

That's because this is a really nicely loaded tower. It packs a 1.8GHz AMD Phenom X4 9100e 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, a 640GB hard drive, and a SuperMulti drive with LabelFlash technology (LightScribe's red-headed … Read more
