IDC device maker ranking shows Apple value, Samsung volume

In the brave new world of connected personal computing devices, Hewlett-Packard is a distant No. 4, with Samsung and Apple leading the way.

Think of IDC's "Worldwide Smart Connected Device Market" report as the 21st century equivalent of PC maker rankings.

Personal computing today includes tablets and smartphones, not just the laptop in your father's home office.

That global smart-connected device market grew 27.1 percent year-over-year in the third quarter to a record 303.6 million shipments valued at $140.4 billion, IDC said today in a research note.

"HP, which is virtually non-existent … Read more

Dell makes pitch for $649 Windows 8 tablets at business

After Dell reported lackluster earnings today, executives made a case for the company's Windows 8 tablets at businesses.

Dell's earnings fell sharply today, with net income in the quarter ended November 2 sinking 47 percent to $475 million compared with the $893 million reported in the same period last year. Revenue was off 11 percent.

So, what is Dell doing about it? Well, it's trying to transform itself into a supplier of IT services.

But before it can do that, it's still trying to sell lots of PCs -- and now Windows 8 tablets.

Nokia's Q3 show phone sales down by a fifth

This can hardly be encouraging news: Nokia's third-quarter financial results show the number of handsets it sold down by 22 percent compared to last year and 1 percent on the quarter before.

Adobe meets Q3 estimates, cuts outlook based on cloud transition

Adobe's fiscal third quarter results were roughly in line with expectations, but the company cut its outlook based on a transition to a cloud computing model.

The company reported third-quarter earnings of $201.4 million, or 40 cents a share, on revenue $1.08 billion, which met the low end of Adobe's expectations. Non-GAAP earnings in the third quarter were 58 cents a share, in line with estimates.

The good news is Adobe is seeing better-than-expected subscriptions to its Creative Cloud. The bad news is there's a revenue hit during the transition. Adobe said:

During the quarter, … Read more

Worst third quarter 'in the history of PCs' on its way -- analyst

Forget, for a moment, that shares of tech stalwarts Apple and Google are trading as if investors are out of their minds. They may well be, but that doesn't mean the giddiness ought to extent to the rest of the tech world.

In fact, Citigroup semiconductor analyst Glen Yeung offered an outright buzz kill of a prediction about the third quarter in an interview broadcast on CNBC on Friday.

"We were looking into the supply chain over the course of August, and really everywhere you looked, PC data points are bad. What we're ultimately going to end … Read more

What's next for Apple? All eyes on the holidays

Apple's rare earnings miss yesterday, driven by a falloff in iPhone sales, dinged the stock and led Wall Street analysts to reassess their expectations and financial models for Apple's current quarter.

The situation is an odd sort of problem. Sure, iPhone sales dipped in the latest quarter -- selling 26 million versus expectations of 29 million -- but the company stressed that its fan-base is simply putting off buying new products until the new version (read: the iPhone 5) comes out.

And that -- along with many other product upgrades -- leads us to look ahead not to … Read more
