Sony mum on PlayStation Vita price drops for U.S., Europe

Sony breathed new life into its PlayStation Vita portable alongside the introduction of the PlayStation 4 today.

The gist of the news: The Vita can be used as a full screen and controller for your PS4, similar to what Nintendo's done with the Wii U. The idea is that you can continue to play a game on the PS4 through your Vita, even if someone needs to use the TV for something else. The only catch for now is that the two devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

That should make the handheld gaming device more … Read more

Apple's Thunderbolt cable gets a price drop, shorter version

Apple has quietly dropped the price of one of its most expensive accessory cables, along with releasing a shorter, cheaper model.

The company now sells its $49, 2-meter Thunderbolt cable for $39. There's also a new 0.5 meter version (that's 1.64 feet) for $29, notes 9to5mac.

Thunderbolt is the input/output technology that brings transfer speeds that exceed what is currently available with USB 3.0 (though not for long), as well as extending that speed across several devices at once. The port was introduced following a collaboration between Apple and Intel in early 2011, and … Read more

Nook GlowLight e-reader price drops to $119

As Amazon gets set to ship out the Kindle Paperwhite, its new e-ink e-reader that features an integrated light, its chief rival appears to be getting a price cut. At least two major retailers -- Target (shown above) and Wal-Mart -- are now advertising the Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight for $119. That's $20 less than the original $139 price, and the exact cost of the entry-level Paperwhite (which, unlike the Nook, includes "Special Offers" ads).

When Barnes & Noble introduced the Nook GlowLight earlier this year, it had problems keeping up with demand (it later admitted … Read more

Flash memory price drop forces Toshiba to cut production 30%

Toshiba will pare flash memory production 30 percent due to an oversupply of the chips used in smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Effective today, Toshiba is making an "adjustment to production" of NAND flash memory at its Yokkaichi Operation plant in Mie Prefecture, Japan, resulting in output cut of approximately 30 percent, the company announced.

"Oversupply of NAND flash memory in the retail market, for application in USB memories and memory cards, has resulted in continual price declines since the beginning of this year," Toshiba said.

Toshiba hopes the move will help to reduce inventory in the … Read more

The importance of tracking prices after you buy

True story. A couple weeks ago I purchased a Sigmac LE55ABD 55-inch HDTV from Wal-Mart for $899. That being a particularly good deal on a 55-inch TV with 3D, my intention was to write about it -- but the model has been out of stock since I received it, so I've held off.

Of course, I've been checking Wal-Mart's site almost daily because I'm keen to write my review. (Wal-Mart is currently the only store that stocks this model.) Yesterday, I discovered that the LE55ABD was still unavailable -- but the price had dropped to $549. … Read more

Sony temporarily chops price of Reader Wi-Fi to $99

With all the major touch-screen e-ink e-readers now priced at $99, we've been wondering when Sony would give a price chop to its $149 Reader Wi-Fi (PRS-T1). Well, now it has--at least temporarily--dropping the price to $99 till December 24.

I've always liked the Sony Readers and the Reader Wi-Fi received generally high marks in our review, but it's hard to recommend with any enthusiasm when competing products form Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo come in at $50 less.

If $99 still doesn't sound good enough, here's another deal sweetener: Sony will also … Read more

Five reasons to cash in on the PS3 at $249

With both PlayStation 3 models dropping $50 in price, now may be the right time to pull the trigger on the Sony console. While it may not have had the best launch in the history of video games, we think the PS3 has ripened into an entertainment and media hub well worth your hard-earned cash. Believe it or not, the PS3 is now less than half of what the 60GB version cost back in November of 2006.

Not sure if now is the right time to consider a PlayStation 3? Allow us to present five reasons why we think it'… Read more

Nintendo 3DS now available for $169.99

Just a friendly reminder to all would-be Nintendo 3DS owners out there: the first-ever glasses-less 3D portable gaming system can now be had for just $169.99, a whopping 32 percent off the original retail price.

Since its mostly underwhelming launch back in March, the 3DS has seen software updates that activated the eShop, Virtual Console, video marketplace, and access to Netflix.

We've since updated our in-depth review, covering all of the new functionality. While we wish there were more to report on the 3DS' gaming front, we're still left with games that have really yet to win us over. Of course we highly recommend the 3D reboot of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but it's possible you played it the first time it was released 12 years ago on the Nintendo 64.

The new 3DS price goes into effect right now, but it may take a bit of time for online pricing to show up. If you're looking for a first-day purchase, heading out to a store may be the right approach.

The 3DS will also add a new color to its repertoire, Flame Red, this September.… Read more
