'Star Trek' phaser rifle sells for $231k

Never underestimate the purchasing power of a "Star Trek" fan.

Beverly Hills, Calif., auction house Julien's has sold -- for a whopping $231,000 -- a one-of-a-kind "Star Trek" phaser rifle wielded by William Shatner in the second pilot episode (and some publicity stills) for the iconic late-'60s sci-fi TV series. Aside from obtaining the weapon and its original case, the winner of the auction also received an original schematic and associated letters signed by Gene Roddenberry and other "Star Trek" producers.

If you're wondering what's so special about this mock rifle, well, in 1965, "Star Trek" series creator Roddenberry had to impress NBC after network executives told him the first pilot needed more of an action-packed adventure vibe. What would any enterprising creative genius do in that situation? Outfit your Captain with a bigger gun, of course! … Read more

Real-life Star Trek phaser set for 'kill'

I'll be the first to admit I'm a Star Trek fiend. I loved J.J. Abram's new movie and I'm currently re-watching the original series on Netflix via my Xbox. But that's telling: I'm using the latest real-life tech to experience the earliest fake tech. I love the tools of the Star Trek universe, and one that I love most is the phaser.

They can be set to stun, kill, or vaporize. It's a badass weapon for a badass time. Now, thanks to the how-to that one laser whiz, Jayrob, posted on Laser Pointer Forums, … Read more

Boldly sit where no geek has sat before...Captain Kirk's command chair

With all the buzz surrounding the release of the new "Star Trek" movie, here's a little something to remind you of the kinder, gentler, and, yes, cheesier days of the original "Star Trek" series (for those of you old enough to remember)...a replica of Captain Kirk's command chair.

This life-size replica is a dead-ringer for Captain Kirk's original swivel-throne from the bridge of the starship Enterprise. Designed from actual Paramount Studio drawings, the swivel seat is covered in leather while the majority of the chair is made from wood.

Xerox updates its Phaser series, adds 5 laser printers

Xerox officially added five new models to its line of Phaser laser printers today, and I had a chance to speak with a product manager over at Xerox to get the scoop on the new product offering (Phaser 3100, 3250, 3635, 3600, and 5500).

While none of these new printers include built-in wireless, a feature that's been growing in popularity (Xerox sells a separate wireless network adapter for the 3600 series), we're still excited to get a few of these MFPs into the lab for some heavy-duty testing. Let's take a peek at some of the models … Read more

Researchers switch to photons in race for faster microchip

The University of Texas at Dallas has entered the race to produce a more powerful semiconductor using a $1.75 million grant from DARPA to develop a microchip that is "faster than anything" on the market today.

The new technology will still be silicon-based but will use photons rather than electrons to speed things up, according to a UT press release.

"This research is intended to produce a completely new class of components that could have a revolutionary impact on information engineering," Professor Duncan MacFarlane said. "The photonic integrated circuit (PIC) we're developing will … Read more

Remote smackdown: Phaser vs. Lightsaber

The battle of the ages is nigh: In one corner is the Star Trek "Phaser Universal Remote Control," fending off potential romance in all directions. Opposite awaits its younger challenger, the Star Wars "Lightsaber Remote Control."

Japan's Taito is the latest to expand the empire into the living room, according to Gearfuse, though we wouldn't have even recognized the remote as a Lightsaber were it not for the Star Wars logo on the box. (Which we we're proud to say.) Other replica remotes have been around for years, though they're usually more expensiveRead more
