Former Microsoft exec Ozzie: 'Of course we're in a post-PC world'

SEATTLE--Microsoft fights the notion that the world has entered the "post-PC era," opting instead for the more Windows-friendly "PC-plus" phrasing.

But Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's former chief software architect, has little doubt that the world has moved on.

"Why are we arguing? Of course we're in a post-PC world," Ozzie said during a question-and-answer session at the GeekWire Summit here.

To Ozzie, though, the discussion is somewhat about semantics. Because, in the end, the market for devices that do general computation is going to continue to expand. And there's plenty of opportunity … Read more

Ray Ozzie starts new venture Cocomo

Famed programmer Ray Ozzie has got a new gig.

The former chief software architect at Microsoft and Lotus Notes creator told the Boston Globe that he is starting a new company called Cocomo and is hiring in the Boston and Seattle areas.

On his Twitter account yesterday, Ozzie said: "What a fantastic year. On to the next adventure."

Ozzie was cagey about what Cocomo will be working on and whether the company has raised money. The first job posting for a user interface designer describes the company's goal this way:

A new day has dawned as it … Read more

'Moving to' versus 'building for' cloud computing

Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie has written a memo that has generated tremendous buzz among the cloud-computing community. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced Ozzie's impending retirement from the company last week, and Ozzie took that opportunity to write "Dawn of a New Day," which outlines a future for computing that is both a challenge and opportunity for the software maker.

Don Reisinger has excellent analysis of that post, so I won't break it down in detail for you here. However, Ozzie's post is interesting to me because it highlights a key nuance of cloud … Read more

Ray Ozzie sees new 'dawn' for Microsoft

As he gets ready to head out the door at Microsoft sometime in the coming weeks, Ray Ozzie is offering up sweeping thoughts on how the company should move forward into the coming decade.

"Let there be no doubt that the big shifts occurring over the next five years ensure that this will absolutely be a time of great opportunity for those who put past technologies & successes into perspective, and envision all the transformational value that can be offered moving forward to individuals, businesses, governments and society," Ozzie wrote in a blog post titled "Dawn of a New Day.&… Read more

Week in review: Jobs stokes fans and foes

Steve Jobs had a busy week, entertaining fans and inciting competitors.

Apple's CEO unveiled a new line of MacBook Airs that are thinner and lighter than the prior model, while aiming to offer the instant-on and long battery life found in the iPad. Available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models, the machines range from $999 to $1,599 depending on the combination of screen, processor, and storage. All use flash memory rather than a hard drive, boasting anywhere from five to seven hours of battery life in "wireless Web use," Apple said.

Jobs also announced that … Read more

Assessing Ray Ozzie's impact at Microsoft

Bringing change to Microsoft has been likened to getting an ocean liner to change course.

By all accounts though, the company has made several such adjustments. While the changes took time, the key ones can often be traced to a moment in time. Bill Gates' Internet Tidal Wave memo marked one such course change. The 2005 Internet Services Disruption memo, by exiting Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, was another.

That long note from Ozzie not only led to the start of Windows Live and an effort to take Office into the cloud, but also helped start what became Windows Azure … Read more

Ray Ozzie stepping down from Microsoft

In a surprise move, Microsoft announced today that Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie is leaving the company.

The move, which raises questions about the company's future technology direction, was announced in an e-mail to employees from CEO Steve Ballmer. Ozzie is leaving after an unspecified transition period, expected to be several months.

"With our progress in services and the cloud now full speed ahead in all aspects of our business, Ray and I are announcing today Ray's intention to step down from his role as chief software architect," Ballmer said in the memo, which was posted to Microsoft's Web site. &… Read more

Scientists to map Ozzy Osbourne's DNA

We all have some kind of relationship with our bodies.

Sometimes, let's admit, it can be abusive. We put cupcakes, cocaine, cognac, cauliflower, and cigarette smoke in there (well, not always all at once), and we somehow expect our bodies to love it.

One man, though, has perhaps stood above all others when it comes to testing the body's limits. That is Ozzy Osbourne, former lead singer of Black Sabbath, husband of Sharon, and one-time spokesman for World of Warcraft.

Osbourne has, at least in the past, thought nothing of a live bat as hors d'oeuvre, a … Read more
