Mars rover Opportunity hits new record for miles driven in space

The plucky little Mars rover Opportunity has proven itself to be the Marco Polo of space. This extraterrestrial robot has set the new record for miles explored by a NASA vehicle in a world other than Earth, according to NASA.

On its 3,309th Martian day on the planet, Opportunity drove 263 feet along the western rim of the Endeavour Crater and broke records by putting its total distance traveled on Mars at 22.22 miles.

The previous record was set 40 years ago by Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt when they visited the moon for a … Read more

It doesn't do the job

If you're serious about applying for new jobs, the process can get overwhelming pretty quickly; all those resumes, cover letters, phone calls, e-mails, and interviews can be hard to keep track of. Job Opportunities Recordkeeping Express Edition promises to simplify this process by enabling you to create a database that tracks your job-seeking activity. Unfortunately, the program's limited functionality doesn't make it much more useful than a good old-fashioned spreadsheet.

The program is part of a suite of so-called data-tracking apps, and you get all of them whether you want them or not; there's a list … Read more

Opportunity keeps on truckin' past 30 km milestone

It keeps going and going.

NASA's Opportunity rover has logged a total of more than 30 kilometers (18.64 miles) of travel on Mars since 2004, thanks to a recent drive of 482 feet (146.8 meters) that put it past the 30 km milestone.

In a report, NASA noted the distance is "50 times the distance originally planned for the mission and more than 12 times the distance racehorses will run next week at the Belmont Stakes."

The twin rover Spirit has been out of communication with Earth since March 2010 after driving 4.8 miles, … Read more

Cloud disrupts, creates channel opportunities

If you are a value-added reseller or systems integrator today--a member of the so-called "channel"--you are keenly aware of the new reality that cloud computing is bringing to bear. In cloud, your traditional technology suppliers are now interfacing directly with the customer, and the channel's "value add" of customer relationship management, technology delivery, and solutions development is being seriously threatened.

Or at least so it seems on the surface. Thomas Bittman, a vice president and distinguished analyst covering cloud computing at Gartner, wrote a post recently that I thought summed up the reality facing … Read more

NASA working on waking Mars Spirit rover

The Spirit rover, currently out of commission on the surface of Mars, could be awakened in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Space.com, John Callas, NASA's head of the Mars rover program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that the "increasing" sunlight on the Mars surface is giving him and his team some hope that it can put the solar-powered Spirit rover back on the job.

"As long as [sunlight is increasing], we will do all we can to increase the chances of hearing from the rover again," Callas told the publication.

However, Callas acknowledged … Read more

Federal rules on campus file sharing kick in today

Frat parties and free music have been among the perks of attending college in the United States during the past decade. But now the days of using fat campus bandwidth to download movies and music via file-sharing networks appear to be coming to an end.

Thursday is the deadline for colleges and universities that receive Title IV federal aid to have implemented antipiracy procedures on their campuses as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008.

HEOA, which was backed by the movie and music industries, addresses a lot of different facets of higher education, but tucked in … Read more

Mars rover gets smarter with age...and software

NASA's rover Opportunity is getting smarter through software.

Celebrating its seventh year investigating the surface of the Red Planet, Opportunity is now able to make its own choices about which rocks it should investigate further and which ones it should leave alone, according to a NASA report on Tuesday.

Thanks to a new software upload, Opportunity's computer can analyze the photos taken with its wide-angle camera and isolate rocks that meet specific criteria. It can then determine whether specific rocks are worthy of close-up shots through its narrow-angle, color-filtered camera.

The new software called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering … Read more

Mediocre astrology readings

MB Purple Star Astrology provides an astrological analysis based on the user's time and date of birth. Although the program gives readings for 12 different aspects of the user's life, like most Mystic Board programs, the readings are brief and not particularly detailed.

As we've come to expect from Mystic Board, the program's interface is cluttered with advertising. We are encouraged to "Donate" and "Make Money Online," which gives us the sense that this program is more about making money than anything else. The program is easy enough to use; users simply … Read more

Simple astrological tool

MB Astrology Natal Chart provides a simple look at the planets, sun and moon on a person's day of birth. While the program looks fantastic and has a lot of details, its lack of information keeps newcomers from enjoying it.

We found the program's interface to be a mixed bag. While very basic and practically fool-proof to operate, the program and its Help file provided no information about Astrology or the meaning of the chart, which left us feeling lost. Upon entering our day and year of birth, along with the longitude and latitude of our birthplace (luckily … Read more

Spammy birth chart maker

MB Astrology Birth Chart lets users view birth charts from several different astrological traditions. Although the birth charts are fine, the ad-filled interface leaves something to be desired.

The first screen of the program is so cluttered with ads for Mystic Board, the program's publisher, it's hard to find the small button that allows you to continue to the program itself. Once there, users enter the date, time, and location of their birth, and the program displays the birth chart in Vedic North Indian Style, Vedic South Indian Style, Vedic East Indian Style, or Western Style. The charts … Read more
