U.S. viewers watched 36.9 billion online videos in July

People in the U.S. have an insatiable appetite for watching online videos.

According to new numbers released by market research firm ComScore, 85.5 percent of people in the U.S. with Internet access watched online videos in July -- that's 184 million people who watched a total of 36.9 billion online content videos in only one month. For comparison, that is equal to every single person on Earth watching at least five videos each.

How much online video did you watch last month?

Across the U.S., 181 million Internet users tracked by ComScore caught a total of 37 billion videos in April. That means 84.5 percent of the U.S. Internet audience viewed an online video, and the average person spent 21.8 hours doing so for the month.

YouTube brings 3D to all -- even if the original video was 2D

YouTube last year allowed video creators to convert their clips to 3D. Now, they're giving ordinary viewers the chance to do so.

The online video site today announced that when users access certain 1080p 3D videos from the site, they'll be given a 3D option under the Quality settings pane. Upon clicking it, the video is automatically converted to 3D, which will require users to don their favorite 3D glasses to view it.

Verizon reportedly taking on Netflix in online video biz

Verizon Communications is ready to get into the online video business.

The telecommunications provider plans to launch an online streaming video service that would take on Netflix, Hulu, and the traditional cable providers, Reuters reported today.

Such a service would mark a break from the company's past adherence to the pay TV model. As of the third quarter, Verizon delivers cable TV, along with Internet and phone service, to 4 million customers under its Fios offering. Yahoo revamps its online video site

Yahoo offers the largest selection of premium video content on the Web--not the user-generated kind that fill YouTube--and yet users have no idea.

So the company is rolling out a new service today, called Yahoo Screen, that puts all of the videos to which it has access in one spot. In the past, users looking for Yahoo's video content had to fish around various Yahoo sites to find programming.

Brightcove files IPO to raise $50 million

Online video provider Brightcove has filed its first document for an IPO, with the goal of bringing in $50 million.

According to the registration statement filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the initial public offering will be managed by Morgan Stanley and Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., and comes on top of the $12 million that the company raised in April and June of 2010, according to BostInnovation.

Netflix to offer Facebook integration (outside U.S.)

Those who are both Facebook members and Netflix subscribers will soon be able to tie their two identities together in certain ways, but only if they live in Canada or Latin America.

In announcing its second-quarter earnings yesterday (PDF), Netflix touched on the topic of its integration with the popular social network.
