Nokia quietly establishes U.S. beachhead at T-Mobile

Nokia's Lumia 710, often lost in the shadow of its higher-profile brothers, has actually gained a modest foothold at T-Mobile USA.

While not a blockbuster, the Lumia 710 has gotten decent traction at T-Mobile's online store. Web sites such as Amazon and Wirefly similarly have the device ranked high among T-Mobile customers.

Its performance marks a promising start to Nokia's attempt to reenter the U.S. market. And unlike conventional strategy, the Lumia 710 didn't achieve its success through the best specifications or the latest network connection. Instead, its attractive price tag and bang-for-the-buck value have … Read more

Nokia may have shipped more than 1M Lumia phones in 2011

Nokia's big push to re-establish itself in the modern smartphone world appears to be paying early dividends The company may have shipped as many as 1.3 million units of its Windows Phone Lumia handsets last year, says Bloomberg.

Surveying the usual range of analysts, Bloomberg found that forecasts varied from 800,000 to 2 million Lumia phones, with only one person estimating less than 1 million, resuling in an average of 1.3 million.

But those numbers refer to the number of units shipped to mobile carriers and retailers rather than actual sales to consumers. Sales to smartphone … Read more

Nokia Lumia 800 hits FCC, CES bound?

With just two weeks until CES, most of the wireless industry is busy making final plans.

We've already told you what we think will happen with tablets and smartphones in Las Vegas, and if carriers and manufacturers have their way, we won't know anything official until the show begins.

Forgive me, but patience is not a virtue in this case. So to get a peek at what might come at CES, I dug through the last couple weeks of filings with the Federal Communications Commission for any clues about new devices. And as it turns out, there was … Read more

Microsoft, Nokia linked to comments on negative Lumia review

Microsoft and Nokia have been linked to the posting of astroturfing comments on a negative Nokia Lumia review.

The review of the Nokia Lumia 800, posted on the Indian Web site Moneylife.in, was based on the technical specifications rather than hands-on experience with the Windows Phone device. The review concluded that "Although Nokia sees its Lumia 800 to be a competitor to Apple iPhone [sic], it is nowhere near the niche product. In fact compared with iPhone, the Lumia 800 can be termed as 'noPhone'."

Many commenters were unhappy with the review. However, the tenor of the … Read more

AT&T, Verizon test 4G LTE Nokia Lumia phone

Behind the scenes, Nokia is making some headway with the big two carriers in the U.S.

The Finnish handset vendor, eager for a comeback, is testing a 4G LTE version of its Lumia 800 smartphone, CNET has learned. That's despite the fact that the Windows Phone operating system powering the Lumia doesn't yet officially support LTE.

The lack of LTE support has been seen as a critical issue for the U.S. carriers, which are increasingly focusing on 4G devices and services. As a result, anyone supporting Windows Phone, including Nokia, faces hurdles getting approval. But Nokia … Read more

Nokia Lumia 800 review: Bold design, blah camera

It's been a couple of weeks now since we first glimpsed the Nokia Lumia 800, one of the first two of Nokia's brave new Windows Phone world, just after it was announced at Nokia World.

This phone had promise: a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED screen, a 1.4GHz processor, a singular design in crazy bright blue and magenta, and a fancy 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics, dual-LED flash, and 1080p HD video capture.

Let me tell you, specs don't always pan out. I have few complaints with the phone's interesting, gutsy design, but the … Read more

Shooting with the Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia got its star turn this week when it finally unveiled its long-awaited Windows Phone 7 devices in London.

Of the two new handsets, the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, the former definitely is the more interesting given its sleek design and high-end features. And of those features, we're particularly excited by the 8-megapixel camera with the high-quality Carl Zeiss optics and an f/2.2 aperture.

Given Nokia's strong history with camera phones (the N8 was a stellar shooter) our friends at CNET UK decided to put the Lumia 800 to the test to see just … Read more
