Colin Giles, Nokia's former senior vice president of sales, has a new gig.

The executive, who left Nokia in April 2012 to spend more time with his family, has been appointed executive vice president of Huawei's Consumer Business Group. In his new position, Giles will head up the Chinese firm's global marketing, retail, and open channel development.

One of Giles' first tasks will be to promote the company's Ascend P6 smartphone. Huawei argues that the handset, which launched just a few weeks ago, is the slimmest in the world, making it an appealing option to international … Read more

iPhone users are brain-dead zombies, says new Nokia ad

They are red-eyed and dead-eyed.

They are brain-dead and stiff-lipped.

Their pale faces stare at you, ready to infect you, so that they can affect you. Who are these people? These are the iZombies.

Yes, no sooner had Samsung become somewhat bored with smacking at Apple's pinata of faith then Nokia decided that it, too, must show iPhone users as a group gone awry.

In a new ad to press home the advantage of the flashy, nonflashy camera on the 925 phone, Nokia paints iPhone users as zombies: all flash and no panache.

Here we have the lone Nokia … Read more

Nokia has dropped another clanging hint about the hotly tipped Nokia Lumia EOS camera phone, promising 41 million reasons to get excited about the new device.

In a canary-hued teaser picture, Nokia says "originality" is just one of the 41 million reasons to watch a live video from the New York event on July 11 at which the phone is expected to be unveiled.

That's almost certainly a reference to the 41-megapixel camera expected to be found in Nokia's forthcoming smartphone. It's rumored to be called the EOS, and is set to build on the … Read more

Microsoft flirted with buying Nokia, WSJ says

Microsoft was in deep discussions to acquire Nokia, but talks have broken down, according to the Wall Street Journal.

With such a deal, Microsoft would gain direct control over the mobile device maker, which has been the marquee partner for the software giant's fledgling Windows Phone operating system. Such a deal could shake up the smartphone business in the same way that Google did when it acquired Motorola Mobility.

Nokia and Microsoft both declined to comment on the report.

Both Microsoft and Nokia had been struggling to regain their once dominant positions. Microsoft has been pushed back on its … Read more

Nokia readies major smartphone camera reveal July 11

Nokia fans, prepare yourself for...something. On Thursday, the Finnish maker of Windows Phone devices invited press to a New York launch event on July 11, promising that the phone maker would "reinvent zoom."

Although the invite teases nothing about a camera, I'm putting my money on another Lumia smartphone, this time, perhaps with the PureView camera zoom lens we've all been waiting for since Nokia first wowed us two years ago with its 41-megapixel monster.

Recent rumors point to a phone code-named Eos that includes a zooming camera lens, though some point out that the … Read more
