Sprint's Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Nexus to taste Jelly Bean first

Sprint today confirmed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rollouts have begun for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Nexus S 4G.

The updates will be made available to consumers over the air and will not require Samsung Kies. According to Sprint, Android 4.1 will download in the background and notify users when it's ready to install.

As we first learned in June, Jelly Bean brings a number of new features to Android devices, including enhanced notifications, Google Now, and smarter widget management.

Sprint also reiterates the added accessibility features that come with Android 4.1. Once these … Read more

Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint's network are now getting a bite of Jelly Bean.

As of yesterday, Android 4.1.1, aka Jelly Bean, has been available for Nexus users through an over-the-air update. Owners of the Samsung phone can follow the steps on Sprint's Galaxy Nexus update page to download and install the latest version if they don't already have it.

The Nexus S 4G is also getting the Jelly Bean treatment over Sprint's network. Like the update for the Galaxy Nexus, this one is available over the air. Users will … Read more

Apple's patent victory could equal faster Android updates

Android users might find themselves benefiting from an unintended consequence of Apple's recent patent battle against Samsung.

Older versions of Android (2.x) that were found to infringe upon Apple's intellectual property might get around the ban with an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, points out 9to5Google.

This would specifically sidestep patent issues for Samsung's Nexus S and its "Pure Google" experience, one of eight models in Apple's cross-hairs.

On the surface, it sounds as if Google and its partners will want to get Android 4.1 deployed to as many devices … Read more

First Android 4.1 update halted due to emergency call snafu

The world's first update to Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean, was pushed back by Vodafone Australia because the new iteration of the operating system wasn't up to the country's standards for emergency phone calls.

The update was supposed to give Nexus S users with the carrier the latest version of Android. The Next Web first reported on the issue.

"We've just been advised that the roll-out the of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to Vodafone Australia customers has been delayed," the carrier said in a blog post. "At this … Read more

Samsung Nexus S 4G tucks into Ice Cream Sandwich

Restless for a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? If you're a Samsung Nexus S 4G owner, don't be.

Sprint began rolling out the over-the-air ICS update today. The carrier predicts that by the end of the month, all users will have had a chance to install Google's most recent OS (so a little patience might be necessary.)

Of course, Nexus S 4G users are used to patience at this point, while waiting months for their turn to get an update that many assumed would come to their "pure" Android devices first.

ICS upgrade hitting Samsung Nexus S shortly

Today is a glorious day, and I'm not talking about all that iPad nonsense. The real news for the Android faithful, and particularly Samsung Nexus S users, is that Ice Cream Sandwich may arrive in just a few short weeks.

According to tech blog Engadget, sources close to the outlet have confirmed the Samsung Nexus S and Nexus S 4G are set to receive Android 4.0 potentially as soon as April. Whether ICS will actually come to these phones has been a saga for sure, with Samsung waffling back and forth on the issue.

Now it appears that … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S, Tab: No Android 4.0 for you

Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab won't be getting the latest and greatest version of Android.

In a blog posting on a Korean promotional site run by Samsung, the company noted that the two devices would not receive the update to Android 4.0, the most up to date version of Google's mobile operating system.

The reason for that, as The Verge explains, centers around Samsung's use of additional software features on those phones, including TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. These suck up hardware resources to the point … Read more

Google presses pause on Android Ice Cream Sandwich updates

Google's Ice Cream Sandwich software update is hardly truckin' it.

The Android 4.0 release, which the company promised last week would roll out to Samsung Nexus S owners, has hit a snag. Frustrated users on Google's Android forum and elsewhere, have complained of over-the-air downloads failing to correctly install, leaving them with the previous software version, Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

"Mine downloaded to like 20% then just disappeared! And it says my device is up to date!" said one user by the name of Matt Mitchell.

"Mine did reach 100% and then it even … Read more

Google tests Android update on employees' Nexus S

Google has begun testing an update for its Android mobile operating system on some Google employees' phones before releasing it to the public.

An over-the-air update for Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich, recently arrived on some employees' Nexus S phones, according to an Android Police report.

"Just got Ice-cream Sandwich update on my Nexus S & it's looking great :)," Google engineer Adel Saoud said in a Google+ post.

Testing of Android 4.0 is expected to take at least a few weeks, with the over-the-air release to follow--good news for Nexus S owners.

Ice Cream Sandwich to follow Galaxy Nexus release

Now that the dust has started to settle on the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich unveiling, it's time to address the update elephant in the room.

I don't blame you if your first question following the event was, "When am I getting Android 4.0 on my phone? Let's face it, there are potentially millions of users with new or semi-new handsets who really want to have that Ice Cream Sandwich experience. In other words, you love the 4.0 stuff but aren't ready to commit to a new phone all over again.
