New Jersey's experiment in allowing storm-displaced residents to vote by e-mail has been extended until Friday.

In the wake of widespread reports of glitches affecting e-mail and fax ballots, the state announced today it will extend the deadline to 8 p.m. ET Friday for returning ballots to county clerks. However, ballots had to be requested by 5 p.m. today.

When Superstorm Sandy struck the northeastern U.S. coast earlier this week, it brought a swath of destruction that harmed people, places, and even Internet connectivity.

Verizon warned that some homes may not get service for another two weeks as the company scrambles to get Internet, phone, and television up and running for customers devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

A company representative warned that the two-week figure represents a "worst-case scenario," and that some customers may get service back up in a few days. On Thursday, it was still working to pump water out of its central offices, according to Reuters.

The service outage isn't related to Verizon's wireless arm, which has held up relatively well in the aftermath of the storm.

New Jersey residents ordering from Amazon will pay sales tax on their purchases next year, the state's governor announced today.

Gov. Chris Christie said his office has reached an agreement with the company, which plans to begin construction on two "state-of-the-art" fulfillment distribution center facilities in New Jersey next year. While the center is expected to create several thousands jobs, Amazon will also start collecting taxes as part of the deal, according to a press release.

For authorities are accusing him of becoming so upset by a movement to recall him that, together with his son, he allegedly took down the recall Web site.

No, he didn't turn up at the site owner's house with machetes and men with deep set eyes and obvious intentions. Instead, the FBI says Roque and his son Joseph sneaked their way illegally into RecallRoque.com.… Read more

Texting while walking could land you a ticket in Fort Lee, N.J.

As with most other states, texting while driving is already banned in the state. But now, Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas Ripoli is also holding pedestrians accountable for their "dangerous walking," including texting-while-trekking -- if it leads to them ignoring crosswalks and lights.

There have been 23 pedestrian accidents since January, Ripoli told CBS New York. While most were minor, three fatalities were reported.

"They're not alert and they're not watching what they're doing," Ripoli told CBS New York's Derricke Dennis. "As of now, [officers are] to give summonses to pedestrians who do not adhere to crosswalks and the lights."

Ripoli, however, told MSNBC that his town is not specifically banning texting while walking.

Folks who are texting while walking in Fort Lee are issued a jaywalking ticket, but only if they also happen to be jaywalking at the same time, the article says. … Read more
