Nero 12 gets ready for Windows 8

Nero 11 Multimedia Suite was already a monster collection of production tools. Though the last iteration provided a solid collection for both the casual and advanced enthusiast, Nero 12 continues to push toward becoming a go-to tool for people's growing network of devices at home.

Nero streamlines workflow with its own built-in file management system, Kwik Media. Applications are accessed from a single interface to avoid fragmentation and reduce confusion. Nero 11 Platinum does it all

Nero 11 Platinum is a one-stop tool shop that lets you rip, burn, back up, convert, edit, and organize all of your digital media. We think it's a solid multimedia work flow solution for casual media enthusiasts and prosumers alike. But be warned--the installation file is massive, tipping the scale at pretty close to 1GB. And installation takes quite a long time as it takes up about 2.5GB of memory. But, with 11 programs making up the powerful multimedia suite, we can see why, and we aren't complaining.

One of our biggest issues with Nero 11 is … Read more

Are video games art? 2010 edition

While the role of the professional critic in the realm of books, film, music, or art is well-established, for interactive entertainment the lines are less clear. As a (relatively) young medium, questions about how to actually write about video games are still being hashed out, by consumers, fans, bloggers, established media critics, and others.

The default to date has been to consider a work of interactive entertainment as a packaged consumer product--hence game reviews that focus on the number of levels, hours of gameplay, and other technical details. I am more inclined to consider a game as a cultural or … Read more

Edit videos and create movies easily

People who don't need the back-up, burning, and mobile transferring functionality offered by Nero's full-service Multimedia Suite might be better served by Nero Video Premium HD, which is the developer's standalone video-editing tool. This program is essentially a more feature-packed version of Nero Vision Xtra, which has also enjoyed some upgrades lately (namely improved background rendering and the ability for users to export movies to Flash Video).

Video Premium HD is a straightforward and fairly quick install that will require a system reboot and a whopping 1.7GB of space on your hard drive (by comparison, Sony … Read more

Nero's newest multimedia tools

There are plenty of options--from iTunes to DoubleTwist to Windows Media Player--that will keep the average consumer satisfied in terms of basic multimedia organization and playback. However, if you count yourself among those creative or persnickety enough to delve into the realm of audio and video editing, you may want to consider some more fully featured media tools.

That's where Nero's latest products come into play. Today, the company announced Nero Multimedia Suite 10 Platinum HD and Video Premium HD, two solutions for "creative enthusiasts" that will be available October 15 for $129.99 and $… Read more

Browser powers and video tools

Three things are on the tips of our tongues lately: Internet browsers, security suites, and video-editing apps. Let's start with the first. NetApplications' browser usage statistics for September provide a look at who's gaining clout on the Web: Google's Chrome, twin mobile powerhouses Apple iOS and Google Android, and Microsoft's IE9. In other browser news, Chrome enjoyed an update that added activation by default of the WebGL 3D graphics technology, an option for built-in Google Instant search results, and some hardware acceleration for some CSS transformations--to the dev version, at least.

On the security side of … Read more

CD burning tool

Nero 9 Lite claims to be a full-service CD burning program. While it looks like a great tool for burning data and music disks, its trial limits kept us from truly finding out what it can do.

The program's interface features a professionally designed layout that flows well from one command to the next. It felt so natural that we weren't upset that Nero doesn't offer any sort of Help file or instructions. Unfortunately, we didn't get to fully experience this program much beyond admiring its layout. While it boasts many tools for burning and ripping … Read more
