Dear HTC, here's how you can become popular again

commentary Dear HTC, I have been a fan of your hardware since my time with the T-Mobile MDA back in 2007. When you became the first company to produce an Android smartphone (T-Mobile G1), I upgraded my loyalty status to "die-hard" and enjoyed releases such as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, HTC Hero, and HTC Evo 4G.

With relatively few companies competing in the Android space in the first few years, I could not see myself going with any other brand. Between 2007 and 2011, my wife and I owned nothing but HTC products. Sadly, neither of us owns … Read more

T-Mobile welcomes Huawei-made myTouch, myTouch Q

Just when you thought that T-Mobile couldn't possibly confuse us more with its myTouch family of smartphones, here come reboots of the myTouch and myTouch Q, this time made by Huawei rather than by LG.

The two new Android 2.3 Gingerbread handsets feature 4G, a 4.0 WVGA touch screen, a 1.4GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and a front-facing camera.

You'll also find Swype's virtual keyboard on baord and T-Mobile's signature Genius button. Add a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and you have yourself a myTouch Q rather than the myTouch.

This time … Read more

T-Mobile turns to Huawei for next MyTouch smartphones

When it comes to the MyTouch series of Android smartphones, T-Mobile has developed a wandering eye.

After exclusively dating HTC for a number of years, the carrier briefly flirted a bit with LG for the current models. And now according to new details passed to Pocketnow, T-Mobile is looking to Huawei for the next round of MyTouch handsets.

The details thus far are somewhat scarce and essentially amount to conjecture, but we may have clues as to what these models look like. The display sizes should be around 4 inches and the Huawei phones may bear a striking resemblance to … Read more

T-Mobile MyTouch and MyTouch Q available November 2

T-Mobile has announced that its new MyTouch and MyTouch Q handsets will be available online starting November 2 and in retail stores starting November 9. They will be $79.99 each after the usual two-year service agreements.

A departure from previous MyTouch handsets like the MyTouch 4G Slide and the MyTouch 4G, the new MyTouch phones are made by LG instead of HTC. Even though both are designated as entry-level smartphones, they run the latest Android Gingerbread firmware. Both have a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture, a front-facing camera, and support for Netflix streaming.

The MyTouch has a 3.8-inch display, while the MyTouch Q has a 3.5-inch display with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The MyTouch is available in black and white, and the MyTouch Q is available in gray and violet. … Read more

T-Mobile adds MyTouch, MyTouch Q by LG

T-Mobile introduced the newest members of its MyTouch family of smartphones last night, the T-Mobile MyTouch and T-Mobile MyTouch Q.

Unlike past models, such as the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide and T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, the smartphones are made by LG instead of HTC and are aimed directly at first-time smartphone buyers.… Read more

Is the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide camera really all that?

HTC has been pushing the 8-megapixel camera on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide hard, mostly for its low-light capabilities and its "zero shutter lag." I won't dispute that it delivers excellent photo quality overall, and that it's a great camera to use, but calling it the "most advanced smartphone camera" on the market is going too far.

To see just where it triumphs and fails in executing still photography, I spent several days shooting outdoor, indoor, low light, and well-lit photos with four smartphones around the San Francisco Bay Area: the MyTouch 4G Slide, … Read more

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide review: Best camera around?

HTC is mighty proud of the 8-megapixel camera and accompanying camera software it put on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide, enough so that it beat its chest that this phone has the most advanced camera on any smartphone around.

We haven't had the phone in our clutches long enough to perform every test, especially against all our other smartphone cameras (but stay tuned--we will!) We did, however, run enough tests to know an overblown claim when we hear one.

The 1080p HD video capture, dual-LED flash, HDR camera software, and extensive other shooting modes are great, don't get … Read more
