Mobileye won't judge you for being a bad driver

LAS VEGAS--Humans can be such terrible drivers. We're checking text messages, drinking coffee, and doing needlepoint behind the wheel (yes, I saw that happen!). Advanced driver assistance systems are trying to save us from our folly.

Mobileye creates these high-tech systems. I was able to plug into a simulator at CES to check out the new 5-Series.

AWS-4000 collision warning

In urban areas, distractions for drivers abound, both outside and inside the car. The AWS-4000 cuts through those distractions to concentrate on what's directly ahead, sounding a very audible warning when a collision is imminent. With its forward-facing camera, the AWS-4000 is a remarkable bit of technology, able to identify cars in the lane ahead and determine your following distance. It even identifies lane lines, as long as they are prominent, and lets you know when you've drifted over.

Mobileye makes advanced safety features available off the shelf

Readers of CNET Car Tech will be familiar with advanced safety systems such as collision-avoidance sensors, lane-departure warning devices, and adaptive cruise control. Trouble is, if you don't own a recently produced luxury car, you are unlikely to see the benefit of this technology.
