Samsung is pushing ahead with flexible mobile devices, a new report claims.

Samsung is currently putting the final touches on flexible displays made of plastic rather than glass, The Wall Street Journal is reporting today, citing an unidentified source with knowledge of the company's plans. Once Samsung's development phase is complete, the company plans to start mass producing the displays for release in the first half of 2013, according to the Journal.

Samsung Display Co. has officially been spun off from Samsung Electronics and has become new corporation, the technology giant announced today. Samsung Display plans to start operating as an independent entity later this week after it completes its incorporation.

Toshiba buying Panasonic's share of LCD venture

As part of its bid to restructure its liquid crystal display business, Toshiba will buy out partner Panasonic's share in the Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., the two companies announced Wednesday.

Toshiba already owned 60 percent of the company, compared with Panasonic's 40 percent, and the resulting buyout will cost Toshiba about 2 billion yen or about $20 million, a Toshiba spokeswoman told The Wall Street Journal. The deal is scheduled to be completed by April 28, when the name of the company will be changed to Toshiba Mobile Display.
