Sometimes you're crammed into a line or on public transportation and don't have much choice other than to snuggle up with strangers. Industrial designer Siew Ming Cheng's Spike Away vest ensures unknown people won't want to squeeze next to you.
Cheng created the vest for a workshop at the National University of Singapore. "Trains are usually crowded during peak hours. Everybody will push each other to try and get onto the train. How can I protect my personal space? The idea was then conceived," Cheng writes.… Read more
As Kelly Clarkson ought to have sung: What doesn't kill you makes you older.
In the case of the Ming clam, however, it stopped aging when scientists at Bangor University in Wales decided to see just how old it really was.
It was found in 2006. At that time, it was thought to be 405 years old. Should you never have tried to count the age of a mollusk, all you do is count the rings on the inside of a shell.
Yes, it's not too dissimilar to what you do with a tree when you want to … Read more
The iPhone 5S has dramatically outsold the iPhone 5C. Or has it?
A recent report from Localytics found that the number of iPhone 5S activations outscored those of the 5C by a factor of 3.4. But one analyst believes the gap in actual sales is much narrower.
In an investors note caught by AppleInsider, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple's two new phones split their sales about evenly, at least during their opening weekend.
Fresh data from KGI Securities reiterates that the iPhone 5S and a lower end model should begin to rollout by July.
Following a research note in January, KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 5S along with a low-cost iPhone 5 will be announced in June and be available by July, according to reports at Mac Rumors and Apple Insider.
Kuo, often cited as one of the more prescient and accurate Apple analysts, believes the 5S will pack a new A7 chip. Apple has gotten quite adept at designing some of the fastest phone and tablet processors on the planet, … Read more
The price of the iPad Mini to consumers remains a mystery, but one analyst believes that Apple spends around $200 apiece to make the entry-level model.
In a note to investors picked up by AppleInsider, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimated that the BOM (bill of materials) and manufacturing costs come to about $195 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.
The priciest single part is the screen at $56.50. The logic board costs a fair amount -- $54 for the Wi-Fi version and $80 for the 4G LTE model, AppleInsider noted.
Of course, Kuo's component list is based on … Read more

The formerly buttoned-up, conservative Dell is clearly still exploring its creative side. First, it started wearing a beret, next we can expect it to grow a beard, start wearing all black, and hit open-mic night at the local cafe twice a week at this rate.
After its first go-round allowing Brooklyn, N.Y.-based urban artist Mike Ming to decorate its Inspiron 1525 laptop, the PC maker has come back for more.
This time, Dell has slathered Ming's tattoo-like designs on its Dell Studio 15-inch and 17-inch notebooks. There's the "Seaweed" design, pictured above, as well … Read more
