MetroPCS announces ZTE Anthem 4G for coming weeks

MetroPCS today announced that its next smartphone, the ZTE Anthem 4G, will join the company's roster in the coming weeks. As the first 4G LTE handset from ZTE in the United States, the device is a mixed bag of midrange Android.

The Anthem 4G runs (only) Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and features a a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and a 5-megapixel rear camera. There's also HDMI output and Dolby Surround Audio. Additional specifications for the smartphone include 4GB internal storage, 512MB RAM, and a microSD expansion slot.

LG Connect 4G shines bright with Nova display (hands on)

LAS VEGAS--As it goes with these matters, it's one thing to hear about this or that phone's bright screen, and another entirely to see it.

The LG Connect 4G, one of MetroPCS' two new LTE Android phones, has a 4-inch LG Nova display that boasts 70 nits of brightness. Indeed, it's pretty luminous.

There are other decent specs on it, too, like a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera, and a VGA front-facing camera.

It's certainly vaulted for the no-contract carrier, which needs to keep unsubsidized costs down, often by offering handsets that pare down … Read more

Senate upholds FCC's Net neutrality regulations

An effort on Capitol Hill to overturn the federal government's controversial Net neutrality regulations failed today.

By a 46-52 vote, the U.S. Senate rejected a Republican-backed proposal that would have lifted the regulations before they take effect on November 20.

This morning's vote was an anticlimactic affair. A veto threat two days earlier from President Obama, coupled with evidence that there was nowhere near a two-thirds supermajority in both chambers, meant that the repeal effort would fail.

The Federal Communications Commission adopted the regulations by a 3-2 party line vote last December. Once they take effect, broadband … Read more

MetroPCS poised to offer 4G LTE-ready LG Esteem

Details of an unannounced LG handset have landed online, giving a clear indication as to MetroPCS' next Android smartphone.

Called the LG Esteem, the handset will closely mirror Verizon Wireless' LG Revolution, right down to the 4G LTE support. Specifications include a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and a 5-megapixel camera.

Known previously as the M910 Bryce, the handset recently cleared the FCC and looks to be ready to launch. Additional specifications include Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 4.3-inch display, and support for HDMI, DLNA, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), GPS, and Bluetooth 3.0. … Read more

Warner Music missing from MetroPCS-Rhapsody plan

MetroPCS Communications announced today that subscribers of the company's $60-per-month Android phone rate plan can receive access to the Rhapsody Unlimited Music service, and some 12 million songs.

Only the service isn't unlimited, at least with regard to the music, due to the absence of one of the four major record labels. Warner Music Group, which has a reputation for being a tough negotiator with digital services, is the only major that didn't sign on to the MetroPCS deal. It's the third-largest of the record companies.

In the past, Warner pulled its music off YouTube during a contract dispute and reportedly was slow to license Spotify's U.S. service. Warner Music and Rhapsody representatives declined to comment about the negotiations.

The idea of bundling music into phone services has been around awhile. The top labels have looked for ways to achieve this but some of the earliest attempts, such as Nokia's "Comes With Music," were a bust.

In that case, consumers were asked to purchase phones that came preloaded with music. With MetroPCS, the music and the charges are tucked into the service and monthly bills.

MetroPCS, a wireless carrier, is known for offering prepaid phones, and a music deal like this should be attractive to the labels. It could help them reach an audience that includes people who aren't participating in the digital economy. It is believed that many MetroPCS subscribers don't own credit cards. … Read more

MetroPCS's 4G isn't exactly greased lightning

Not all 4G networks are created equally. Just look at MetroPCS.

The prepaid provider and Verizon Wireless may share the same 4G technology, Long-Term Evolution, but the two have little else in common. It's a fact well known in the industry but less clear to consumers: MetroPCS's 4G service is significantly slower than the one Verizon is offering.

"The carrier's average speed is like a very good 3G network," PC Mag's Sascha Segan reported from the publication's speed tests earlier this year.

MetroPCS's 4G network was born out of the company's … Read more

MetroPCS to focus on Android, LTE

If the AT&T-T-Mobile merger gains approval, that de facto bumps MetroPCS, the nation's fifth largest carrier (8 million subscribers), into the No. 4 slot that T-Mobile currently holds (33 million subscribers).

I sat down at CTIA 2011 with Tony Lau, director of handset product management for MetroPCS to chat about the carrier's plans going forward.

LTE Android phones are top of mind for the carrier of prepaid, no-contract phones, which hopes to follow up the release of its first Android smartphone with more LTE handsets, up to 5 by the end of 2011. For the time … Read more

MetroPCS intros 'stylish' Huawei M735

MetroPCS' new recruit, the Huawei M735, isn't trying to win points by running with the pack. Instead, Huawei hopes it can earn notice for its distinctive white style with colored accents.

The BREW-powered cell phone features a 2.8-inch QVGA (320x240 pixels) touch screen, a 3-megapixel camera, and MP3 player. It also takes up to 8GB of external memory.

The Huawei M735 costs $99 without a contract and is available now.
