Ex-Nokia employees to launch Meego smartphone

A group of former Nokia employees has formed a company with the goal of bringing to market a smartphone powered by software discarded by their former employer.

The Finnish startup Jolla plans to base its handsets on the defunct Meego operating system, which was developed in partnership with Intel but was essentially left for dead when Nokia opted to drop investment in the platform and move to Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.

The company will be led by Chief Operating Officer Marc Dillon, who worked at Nokia for almost 11 years, most recently as its principal engineer for Meego.

5 blunders that put Nokia in the hot seat

If Nokia goes down, it won't be CEO Stephen Elop's fault.

The company appears to be in a nosedive after it warned again that its financial performance would disappoint. In addition, the company said it would cut 10,000 positions, or nearly 10 percent of its work force, by the end of 2013, as it reshuffles its management team and showed a few executives out the door.

While the clock is ticking, Elop still has a chance to pull the company out of its nosedive. Things don't look good, though, and they could get worse before they … Read more

Nokia Lumia 800 vs. Nokia N9

One of the first things we noticed about the Nokia Lumia 800 is that it looks strikingly like the Nokia N9, which runs Nokia's soon-to-be-extinct MeeGo OS.

Indeed, it has a similar unibody polycarbonite shell along with the same curved AMOLED display. But on probing further, we found that the differences between the two go far beyond just operating systems. Here we compare the two devices side by side.… Read more

How a Nokia N9 is born

We've seen how Nokia tests the durability of its phones, but how about putting them together?

With Nokia World almost upon us, the Finnish company has uploaded a YouTube video of the making of its MeeGo-powered N9. The phone's OS may be dead upon arrival, but we're still drooling over the N9's looks since its first unveiling at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore.

Watch how the polycarbonate chassis and curved display get assembled in the video below:

Samsung: We're not buying MeeGo

Samsung Electronics says it isn't buying MeeGo. In fact, Samsung says it couldn't even if it wanted to.

"Meego is an open-source project which cannot be a target of acquisition," Samsung representative James Chung told CNET today.

The response dashed hopes that MeeGo might be saved through an acquisition, which was spurred this week by a Mobiledia report that Samsung was interested in a deal.

Many had expected Samsung and other handset manufacturers to look toward acquiring their own mobile operating system, which would allow them to reduce their dependence on Google's Android platform. Google'… Read more

Samsung interested in Meego, report says

Samsung Electronics may be considering a purchase of the increasingly defunct smartphone operating system Meego as its own proprietary platform.

That's according to a report today from Mobiledia, which cites industry sources.

A Samsung representative declined to comment to CNET.

The platform chatter highlights the increasing dilemma that Android handset manufacturers face now that Google plans to buy Motorola Mobility and make its own smartphone. The companies that have been reliant on Google for its Android operating system must compete against it now, leading many in the industry to wonder if those handset makers wouldn't prefer to use … Read more

On Call: Lost iPhones, unlimited data plans, and Nokia's device strategy

On Call runs every two weeks, alternating between answering reader questions and discussing hot topics in the cell phone world.

It's been a few months since I've used On Call to answer reader questions, but this week offered the perfect opportunity. Being that tomorrow, June 29, is the fourth birthday of the original iPhone, I wanted to tackle a great query on replacing a lost Apple device. Plus, the ongoing AT&T-T-Mobile merger has produced a lot of reader questions on the status of unlimited data plans, and the recent introduction of the Nokia N9 has cause … Read more

MeeGo tablet demo looks great, but will there be enough apps?

BARCLEONA, Spain--Is MeeGo dead in the water now that Nokia has fallen in love with Windows Phone 7 for its smartphones? Partner Intel has been doing its utmost to dispel the doomsayers at Mobile World Congress, showing off an impressively slick demo of MeeGo-powered tablet software.

It showcases a swipe 'n' tap interface flicking between friends, music, photos, and other content, while swiping down to access more information, and tap-holding to trigger pop-up menus for more actions. It's very visual, and in the above demo video at least, appears to be running like a dream.

Alien Dalvik to extend Android apps reach

Mobile software maker Myriad plans to launch software that lets non-Android-based smartphones run apps designed for Google's mobile operating system.

The software, known as Alien Dalvik, will allow non-Android OSes to run Android Package (APK) files with little modification, the company announced yesterday. "The proliferation of Android has been staggering, but there is still room for growth," Myriad CEO Simon Wilkinson said in a statement.

MeeGo will be the first OS to support Alien Dalvik--a relation of the Dalvik virtual machine that is included in stock Android software--and Myriad said it will announce further platform support in … Read more
