Mark Cuban flings funding at Flingo

Smart TV software company Flingo announced today it has received a $1 million dose of Series A funding from billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban and venture capitalist Gary Lauder. This money will go toward helping the company expand its presence with smart TV and device manufacturers around the world.

That financial injection brings Flingo's Series A funding total to $8 million, and comes just weeks after August Capital led a $7 million round of financing.

The idea behind Flingo is smart TV technology that mixes social networking with broadcast content on both TVs and second screens, such as tablets, laptops, … Read more

Apple confirms plans to build data center in Oregon

A 160-acre parcel of land has been signed over to Apple and will be used to build a data center, an Oregon TV station reported today, confirming a long-standing rumor.

The piece of land in Prineville cost the company $5.6 million and the deal, formerly known as "Project Maverick," has been quietly in the works for months, according to a KTVZ.com report. An Apple representative confirmed to the station that the company purchased the land for a data center but declined to comment further.

Before the deed was signed over last week, no one was allowed … Read more

Ubuntu 10.10 desktop reaches through the cloud

The next versions of Ubuntu Linux for desktops and Netbooks will launch Sunday with new cloud features, an updated interface, and better links with other operating systems, Canonical has announced.

The software, known as Maverick Meerkat, will both be versions 10.10 of the Linux distribution, the company said yesterday. They will be available for free download from October 10, sidestepping the usual Thursday release window to tie the launch in with the 10/10/10 date stamp.

Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition and Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition focus on integrating mobile access to other devices via Ubuntu's … Read more

Hard-boiled eggs straight from the hen

On Sunday, my son announced that he wanted "eggy." So, my husband grabbed a couple of eggs, filled a pot with water, and we began the process of making hard-boiled eggs.

Did I mention my son is five, and is rather impatient? For the next 30 minutes or so, all we heard was, "I want eggy. Where is my eggy?" So, of course, we pulled the eggs out too soon, they were soft-boiled instead of hard, and my son rejected them as "icky."

If only I had known on Sunday about the Henrietta Hen Egg Cooker. … Read more

Is Shaq trying to seduce Mark Cuban via Twitter?

Shaquille O'Neal and Mark Cuban are deeply confirmed Twitterers.

They have different styles but their fingers seem rarely to leave their keyboards. Perhaps one can even blame sore Twitter-finger for Shaq's poor free-throw percentage.

However, I have been following a bizarre Twitter exchange between the two NBA personalities, one that has now blossomed into strong rumors that Shaq wants to be traded to Cuban's Dallas Mavericks.

It all began on Saturday when Shaq, who has almost 600,000 followers, tweeted: "I'm lookin foor u mark cuban".

The Dallas Mavericks owner replied: "you know … Read more

Mark Cuban screams at NBA refs--on Twitter

(Updated 12.23PST. Herewith Mark Cuban's latest Twittered news- with Dallas being smoked by Cleveland, Cuban tweeted: "just found out got fined25k by nba.) nice". Oh, Lordy.)

How can anyone not enjoy Mark Cuban?

A man who danced passably well on "Dancing with the Stars". A man who tends to say frightfully sensible things as loudly as possible in the hope that someone will hear. And a man who has been fined a total of $1.5million, some of it for complaining about NBA refs.

It seems as if he has been strangely quiet on … Read more

SEC charges Mark Cuban with insider trading

This post was updated at 3:39 p.m. with observations from attorney John Hueston, the former federal co-lead prosecutor in the Enron case.

Digital media maverick Mark Cuban was charged with insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the agency announced Monday.

Cuban, the founder of Broadcast.com and owner of high-def cable channel HDNet and the Dallas Mavericks, allegedly was invited to participate in a private investment in Internet search engine company Mamma.com back on June 28, 2004. But instead of keeping the information confidential, Cuban, who was Mamma's largest investor, called his broker within … Read more

Maverick puts Google Talk on Android G1

I won't lie. It feels good getting a G1 Google Android phone in my hands. It's also a little paralyzing: so many new apps to explore, a new interface to learn; where to start? The free Google Talk app Maverick is as good as any. Admittedly, the G1 dutifully hosts individual IM clients for AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo, and of course, Google Talk. The difference is that Maverick adds some panache and pizazz by layering in multimedia capabilities, like sending photos, scribbles, your GPS location, emoticons, and snippets of text.

It's a fun idea that pans … Read more

The one question Mark Cuban should have to answer if he wants to buy the Chicago Cubs

Those nice people at ESPN reported this week that Mark Cuban, who I am told, was given a lot of money by Yahoo for some gizmoid or other, is one of the finalists in the bidding to buy baseball's most charming, unlucky, losersome team, the Chicago Cubs.

There will be those on the waggy side of humorous who will claim that he is the perfect person to own the Cubs as his Dallas Mavericks team is one of the most charming, unlucky, losersome teams in the NBA.

(My prejudices. One, I have Golden State Warriors hats and shirts and … Read more

Mark Cuban should remember he's a geek and welcome back bloggers

Technology and new media made Mark Cuban a billionaire.

Why would the founder of Broadcast.com and the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks force bloggers into a digital ghetto by limiting their access to his basketball team? Isn't he a card-carrying member of the digerati?

By banning bloggers from the Maverick's locker room, that's what he's doing, according to several journalism poobahs, including the Society of Professional Journalists.

The kerfuffle allegedly began when Tim MacMahon, who blogs for the Dallas Morning News, wrote something to the effect that the Mavs needed a new coach. … Read more
