Hacker who infected 72K computers gets prison sentence

After pleading guilty last year to creating a botnet that wreaked havoc on about 72,000 computers, Joshua Schichtel was sentenced to prison today. The Department of Justice announced that Schichtel received a 30-month prison sentence for "selling command-and-control access to and use of thousands of malware-infected computers."

Schichtel was a unique hacker. Rather than infecting computers for his own benefit, he instead sold botnets to customers who must have not had the tech know-how to create their own malware.

Fortinet: Job outlook improving for cybercrooks

Cybercriminals are likely to find more jobs next year, one of five top trends forecast by security vendor Fortinet.

In an ironic twist in the job market, more positions will open up for developers who can write customized malware packers, people who can break CAPTCHA codes, and distributors who can spread malicious code, according to Fortinet.

Microsoft: Over 2 million U.S. PCs caught in botnets

More than 2 million PCs in the U.S., or 5.2 out of every 1,000, were recruited into botnets during the second quarter of 2010, according to a Microsoft report released yesterday.

The company's ninth and latest Security Intelligence Report tracked the spread of botnets and malware infections detected and removed throughout the world during the first and second quarters of the year. Microsoft takes aim at fake antivirus program

Updated 2:45 p.m. PDT with Barracuda Networks warning of Web site promoting rogue program using the Barracuda brand.

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool was updated this week to detect a generic type of fake antivirus program known as "Win32/InternetAntivirus."

The Microsoft Malware Protection Center gives Win32/InternetAntivirus an alert level of "severe."
